I'm hoping to blag a cheapie deal to get to Las Vegas in early March
next year. About a five anna bit day trip in total. I'd like to squeeze
in a road trip to San Diego plus a day trip to the Grand Canyon.

    Do-able?

Tips on route, places to see, hotels in San Diego gratefully received.

Yes. Round trip to San Diego is a day's drive in each direction. You can
go via the south rim of the Grand Canyon, then overnight in Lake Havasu
(home of London Bridge), then on to San Diego.
The Gaslamp Corner for dinner, then a jazz bar. Balboa Park, a harbour
cruise, Coronado Island, the zoo, the Wildlife Park, Sea World, a quick
side trip to Tijuana (you can get there by tram!), whale watching from
    Oceanside...

San Diego's a fucking brilliant town. Vegas is... OK for a night.

I can show you the wonderful wilderness of the American Southwest for
free. Showing you how to get back, though, might cost you.

You need at *least* three nights for Vegas.

Gamblin', drinkin' and whorin' can't all be done in a day you know!

Oh, and out of season around those parts is a bit scary. Gun totin', banjo
playin' rednecks aplenty. We were warned to take care and not carry cameras
    etc. or wave cash about.

Someone was pulling your leg. Those weren't rednecks, they were
redskins. And they aren't banjos, they're bongos. Or tom-toms. By far,
the scariest thing about the place are the tourists.

Thinking back (it was quite a few years ago) you may well be right. Dodgy
    looking lot.
We were the only tourists at that time.

You may be right about that as well
