  2. Excellent.

Did I mention that France is supposed to have kept a Concorde in flying
    order?

According to Little Bruvver, who lives close to Toulouse, when they
unveiled the new A380, and all the European politicos gathered, effing
Mitterand flew in on a Concorde, to upstage them all.

Only a subsonic hop from Paris, but all the same.

Seems they kept one going and it's been appropriated as a Presidential
    plane.

Dunno if it's true, because I can't find anything on Google.

Sweet. *Nothing* makes a noise like a Vulcan at takeoff. Like a
Merlin, brings tears to the eyes.

Good, I was keeping my fingers crossed to see one fly again. Last time I
spotted on in the air, I was as about 12.

RR Olympus engines... are those the same as Concorde had?

Does it make the same noise as Concorde did?

  7. I will never forget being invited to Farnborough to witness a 'noise test'
on a weapons loader. I had supplied the engine and some bods from the
Ministry (of Noise?) wanted to conduct some tests on the sound envelope!

They positioned about 10 x very sensitive Bruel & Kjar microphones around
the weapons loader with an equally expensive Nagra tape recorder to take the
    measurements.

The Ministry Bods called for silence as the wepons loader lifted up a rather
large bomb! but just as they were adjusting the gain on the Nagra, a Vulcan
took off about 50 yards away.

All the needles on the Nagra appeared to be permanently bent against their
stops but the weopons loader got it's 'quiet' certificate.

    Happy days...

Does Clarkson still have a Lightning parked on his drive?

    [fx: goooooooogle]

Well, that was a waste of time. One reference to the local Council having a
    hissy fit.

I remember seeing the Vulcans at RAF Abingdon airshow.
When they did the full power vertical climb above the runway the effect was
    stunning.
There would be kids running around in tears and old people scattered
    everywhere clutching their chests....

My dad has some lovely old slides of the Type 698 VX770 flying at
Farnborough. I'll have to scan them and stick them up on the website
    some time.

My earliest memories of the Vulcan were as a kid at home in
Bedfordshire where, during the airshow season, she would often be seen
circling over our house, presumably holding for her slot at one of the
numerous local shows. The first time I saw a display was truly
awesome; the way she would fly low and fast down the display line,
almost silent as she ran towards you and then the earsplitting noise
and vibration as she climbed hard ... wow!

It was a sad day when we watched XH558's last display flight in
September 1992 - We were at the Cranfield Air Show and she flew past
with the Red Arrows in 'Vulcan' formation around her. On the last
pass she had the bomb-bay doors open and 'goodbye' was painted inside
.... I cried, soft shite that I am.

It will be wonderful to see her in the air again so another generation
can be awestruck by the power and grace of a truly superlative
    aircraft.

Ditto, in Gloucestershire. Staverton 'airport' was only about 3 miles
as the crow flies from our house, so when the airshow was on in the
70s we used to have grandstand seats in the back garden.

We lived just down the road for a couple of years. I used to go and
sit in the field and watch the planes. I was most miffed when I found
out they wouldn't let women be pilots (though that's changed now I
think) and I'd never get to be in the red arrow display team.

Ambitions dashed at the age of 4. A harsh lesson in the fact I was
    living in a patriarchy.
    So they should be.

We used to watch the Biggin Hill airshow from the garden of the 'White Bear'
near New Addington. That's where I saw/heard/*felt* the Vulcan last. Truly
    awesome sound.
