I have yet to venture into the new world of more than one partition,
never mind another OS. No plans to do so either. And amongst our
    family I'm the expert.

  3. No.

The Windows directory can be on any local drive. The boot sector needs
to be on whichever partition is defined as active (but this can be also
done using a chain-loading boot manager like lilo or grub - my setup at
home has Ubuntu on the first drive and WinXP on the second - with the
winxp loader also on the second drive but chain-loaded by grub if I
select WinXP from the boot menu).

  5. To be fair the 'average' Windows user won't know about boot.ini and
won't ever need to. Windows writes it at install (or re-install) and
the last disk utility I used to move a Windows setup from one disk to
another re-wrote the boot.ini for me.
