Yesterday, whilst servicing and washing the Zed, I noticed that the
paint on the radiator ends was a little "bumpy".

I'm not sure if it's always been like this, or if I've got some ally rot
starting underneath the paint. The paint isn't broken anywhere, so if it
is bubbling that would have to be a manufacturing defect.

The warranty ran out in June :-(

May I ask the Z750/1000 owners to fondle their radiator ends & report
    back on the bumpiness?

The Zed thou's have a shield around the edges, but with judicious fingering
(fnar) I gained access. Smooth as a baby's arse, but the front of the rad
edge is (was) slightly bumpy, but a wipe with a damp cloth showed it was
    nothing more than road shite.

I'd be surprised if it was ali rot too, unless there're somewhere for the
weather to get at the rad from the outside. The coolant (as supplied by Kwak
at manufacture) has enough "stuff" in it to stop it rotting from the inside.
Well there's no rot on mine and it's just topped 11,000 miles and 2 years
    use.

Mine's always been clean and spotless as it's in the open and easy to
    keep clean.
I suspect it's poor preparation prior to painting, or a problem during
assembly as it's lumpy on both the front and back and there's no sign of
    any stone chips etc.

And it's not like it's seen much rain in its 3,800 miles either.

I'll have a chat with the local Kawasaki dealer next week I think.

You triggered a thought there Gyp. As it doesn't have the Zed thou's ali
shield, it *could* have had a coat of "Stonechip" sprayed on before painting
    to add protection.
Mine saw **** all BUT rain for 2000 miles last month. Doesn't seem to have
    affected it though.
    Seems reasonable.

Possibly, and that would make sense, though I'd expect it to be little
    more even if it was.

Monday morning or Friday afternoon bike?

You could always pick a little of the coating off to see if it's rot. If
it's not, then a dob of Smoothrite will see it back as it was, and if it
*is* rot, you've got to it soon enough that you shouldn't need a (600 quid)
    radiator.

Having popped into George White's this afternoon and fondled about 10
new and used Zed rads, it seems like they're all like that; 750's and
    thous.

All have a touch of radulite.

Except for one that was covered in stone chips and was starting to look
    quite horrid.

Must be going down in quality then, coz mine's got a nice smooth finish AND
it's held up well to two winters. At least you now know it's not just your
    bike ritting silently away.
They will once they're on their way. Seems odd that people let them get to
the point where they look shite, as a half hour with some fine wet and dry
and a can of Smoothrite will keep them looking like new. That's just me
    though.
