I don't really know where to ask this, so thought i'd try the FOAK on
    here.....

Couple of days ago i noticed a load of orange cable had been laid along the
verges around the ikea roundabout and the one under the A610, at Eastwood in
notts, just sort of unrolled from a spool and shucked down, big coils of it
in places where it had been dumped from a spool, it's about the size of
lawnmower flex... and no i don't rekon that's what it is, as theres well
    over a mile of it.

Next day it had been ran accross the roads with those rubber mini speed bump
    type covers over it,

Today i noticed there are connection boxes every so often, like the ones you
see when they are doing those traffic monitoring things with those pneumatic
    sensors accross the road,
but from these boxes came much smaller diamiter black wires, about phone
line drop wire size, they run to some kind of spikes that have been shoved
in the earth, these spike things are every foot or 2, in a nice straight
    line, blue cap on them,

every now and then there's a big chrome metal spring thing, sort of like
half a paperclip stuck in the ground.

At one point they'd drilled holes in the tarmac next to the kerb to shove
these spike things in, then they go back to the grass verge.

They seem to terminate in a portacabin in a builders yard (buildbase) i was
going there anyway, that's how i saw it, a miserable looking security guard
was preventing anyone getting near the part of the yard they had
    comandeered,
they also has some bloody strange trucks, i imagine cable layers... like
crane trucks, massive wheels about 5 foot tall, but where the crane bits
would go, were open sided boxes,

i asked in buildbase about these spikes, wires etc, but was told they arent
allowed to say whats going on, and was warned not to ask the security guard
as he's pissed off with being asked, and he wont give any info out.

Any ideas WTF is going on here? i'm thinking siesmic monitoring or
something, as it's all old coal mines under here, but i cant find anything
    about whats going on localy.

Could be. The blue caps might be small transducers. The HQ of the
British Geological Survey is in Keyworth, Nottingham. Call in and ask
them if they are up to something.

Could be a survey of traffic induced ground borne vibration, but I doubt
there's much new to be learned by that these days.

Is the Ikea built on old reclaimed industrial land? Our nearest one is
on the site of an old steel works. Factor in mine workings below and you
have a recipe for possible subsidence. Look out for 'tell-tales' on
buildings nearby (squares of glass fixed to walls which crack to show
    movement).

Yeah, we used to live 'round the corner' from Ikea and the whole area
is covered with old mines, mine workings and slag heaps. The valley
used to have a few adits along it, mostly blocked and mostly small and
shallow, but there nonetheless, and deeper mines honeycomb the area ..
    many not properly mapped.

I used to be a miner before I moved to Notts and took an interest in
local mining when we moved there. I married a girl from Eastwood .. ;)

I'm down there this weekend so will try to make time to have a look
myself and ask father in law .. he has a nose in _anything_ that's
    happening locally .. ;)

Did you find anything out by any chance, it's driving me nuts trying to
    figure out what's going on,

i imagine it is a geological survey type thing tho, as a coal seam runs very
close to the route the wires and 'sensors' run,

I know the whole area is riddled with mines, where i live theres a mile long
tunnel between 2 mines (moorgreen and brindsley) and lots of workings under
the house, but then again, the whole estate was built for the miners, so i
guess you have to expect that.

    Sorry, forgot to post.

No, father in law thinks (general speculation amongst friends) that
they're monitoring ground movement, or as you say, a full on geological
survey. There has been a machine down there 'hammering' the ground
which sounds like some kind of seismic survey might be going on too.

It sounds like no-one on the site is talking, so speculation is rife ..
    ;)
