I have a bolt that is now knackered which has 3 F and 8.8 written on the
head. I have a pile of stainless bolts with F S and A2-70 written on the
    head.

What I need to know is, is the stainless bolt suitable for the intended
application? I don't want to use a bolt that aint up to the job.

It's the two bolts that hold the top plate for the front shocker on a Vespa
front fork. So it will be taking a fair pounding I would imagine.

    Grade 8.8 steel bolts have a tensile strength of 788 newt-mm2; A2-70
    stainless is 700 newt-mm2.

I'd have no qualms about using the stainless. Your Vespa will have bags
    of tolerance.

Should be no problem, there's about 10% less tensile strength (in theory)
between the two bolts and the design will have 100% tolerance.

But, it's worth noting, not the same high tensile.

Especially when the OP could buy the proper bolts for tuppence from a

This is the kind of thing I was concerned about. I was hoping to get on
with its resto over the weekend but I might just lie down and take a rest.
