Paging those that know how to make a web folder secure without...

.....having to pay out £10 a month for the feature?

Is there a way?
Granted, £10 a month will allow me to also host another 40 domains, give me
another 40GB of monthly bandwidth, another 1.51 GB of space, a shared SSL
cert, etc but all i really want to know is can i do it without all that?

PS, its a windows not unix/lunux environment

htaccess also requires Override to be allowed on that directory, which
they may nobble. I would. Last thing I want is my web server grinding to
a halt statting non-existant htaccess files all over the shop.

 

What do you mean by "secure"?

 

..htaccess is an apache thing.
if Paul is using Windows ("its a windows not unix/lunux environment"),
it's probably IIS

Paul -> if your host allows you ASP.Net, you can put password
directives in your web.config
or if you just have asp, you could make a script that dumps out the
"protected" file when the person gives the right password

I only want to make one folder secure in the sense its an admin file for an
online shop im playing with setting up.
just so that no one can simply type in www.mydomain.com/admin/ and suddenly
find themselves able to configure it
