mixing up some petroil.... 50:1, so that's 1 litre of oil for every 50
    litres of petrol,

would i be right in thinking that makes it 20ml per litre?
and hence the 4 litres i put in the jerry can today needs 80ml of oil to
    make the proper ratio.

i've always just put a bit of oil in till the fuel turns a light red colour
and i get a good dose of smoke from the exhaust, but that's making a bit too
much smoke i rekon, so best do it properly before some smoke nazi spots me.

well, i'll mix it at 20ml per litre, and if i seize the engines up, i'll
come and cry on here, then start asking where i can get a re-build kit for a
chinkie 32cc R/C buggy engine and a 50cc generator engine.

  11. Yes; 50:1 is 50 parts of petrol for one of oil, so that's 1/51th
of a litre oil in a litre of mixture, or 19.607843 ml in a litre.

If you're not bothered by having more than 4 litres, yes you can
add 80 ml of oil. Otherwise, remove 78.431373 ml of petrol and replace
by the same amount of oil. Assuming there isn't a volume change on mixing...

Thats what I call being pedantic.
Rather call in at any garden machinery supplier, usually found in the
corner of a garden centre, and buy one of those nice mixing bottles with
the nice convenient markings. Or buy a chainsaw and get one free in the box.
