I test fitted my trusty Oxford Lifetime throwovers on the Shiver today
as my inner pikey won't sanction expenditure on snazzy new luggage when
the cash could buy a Puig screen. With some soft mesh stuff to stop
scuffing the small side panels they rest on I think they will work.
Though perhaps a piece of aluminised mat glued on the back on the areas
closest to the Akros might be advisable. They only have to get to Pahnd
Island and back, I'll be using just a tank bag and my tail pack (which
I've already checked will work) for the French run.

The good news is that the old Baglux bag works OK on the new tank
protector. The bars get a bit proximate to the side pouches on full lock
but can still get the ignition key in and out with it in place. I can
even see the speedo with the bag extended to its full height.

Looks fine when empty, but are those plasic bits above the cans going
to bend down when they've got some weight in?

Not a chance, once filled they'll touch and it'll be burnt underpants
    on the M6.

What I did with the Zx10r was to bodge a metal frame that I sit on top
of the pillion seat which holds the panniers a few inches clear of the
exhausts and about 4 inches higher. With your bike I'd be tempted jut
to run the pannier straps over the top of the tailpack, mounting the
whole lot high, then tie it all down to the pillion grab handles with
    a rachet strap instead.

That's a neat idea. A couple of bits of wood nailed together would do
    the trick.

I speak as a founder-member, along with Champ, of the ISMTPA[1] club.

That must be quite spectacular at 165mph!

  6. To be fair, you don't have much luck with motorcycle luggage in
    general.....

What intrigues me is that you actually *kept* them. I don't know
anyone else who's ever amassed a collection of half-throwovers.

If he knew someone with a collection of cable ties he could probably
    assemble some kind of frankenluggage.

Eh? You'd throw away perfectly serviceable kit just because you
couldn't actually make any use of it?

    Wierdo.
I even tend to hold on to things like broken mirror assemblies if the
glass is OK, just 'in case'.

Yes, so you keep one damaged set, but *four*?
I carted the remnants of it to the council tip the other day. I could
    see pain in her eyes

    <Raises hand>

Well, I have one surviving half.

What galled me more was losing bottles of Belgian beer through the
hole in the bottom, and most of the rest exploding in situ with the
    heat of the silencer :-(

I'm sure I posted up a pic at the time !

Can I have my ISMTPA # now ?

Making 'progress' up the M20 at night. Apparently looked like I'd been

I solved the problem on the Tiger by buying the Givi pannier bars
    (which were eye-wateringly expensive, BTW)

They're less intrusive than a wingrack (being as they're bits of bent
pipe) but they do hold soft panniers well clear of anything spinning
around at high speed or hot.

    In communiqué
Hmm, I see they do one for the Shiver or about £45, but it needs
modifying if Akros are fitted. Might save a lot of faffing about though.

Mine were the thick end of £180 IIRC, but the problem was that Givi
had discontinued the line for my model, so I had to get them imported
from a Triumph dealer in the US (one of only 3 Givi pannier kits left
in the western world apparently ;-)
