Paging TOG - Value of an 860GTS?

Discussion in 'Classic Motorcycles' started by Ian Northeast, Sep 14, 2003.

  1. I can't say I've used it a lot and and an RSV1000R looms so garage space
is needed. 1976 model in an olive green sort of colour. It's certainly
not concours but isn't in too bad nick. It's never been restored but
it's not been used much. Original to the best of my knowledge except
    for:

    Electronic ingnition (Prince of Darkness variety unfortunately);
Gearchange and brake have been exchanged so that the gearchange is in
    the traditional position on the right and one up 4 down;
    Nasty Suzuki tail light has replaced the original which I don't have;
Shocks are Marzocchi, I'm not sure if these are correct or not.

All switchgear etc. is the Ducati original and therefore doesn't work
too well. It still has the strange wire indicator/headlight brackets.
Some of the chrome is rather rusty. The paintwork is rubbed in places.
The plastic housing for the ignition sensors is damaged. It cracked a
cylinder head once but this was repaired, not really professionally but
by a mate who welds up aero engine turbines in the aero engine shop - I
think he did a proper job.

I think you might even have seen it once!

PS it's not for sale just yet, it needs a battery to get it running. It
    runs OK off jump leads:)

So what might I get for it?

    Thanks, Ian

  2. A grand at least. Maybe as much as 1500 if you gimp it nicely.

  5. TBH I'd prefer to sell it to someone I don't know, as I don't know what
gremlins might lurk. But if Timo is interested, I'm certainly prepared
    to discuss.

I once sold a Jawa combo which TBH was total crap to a bloke for 250
quid. Six months later, I was at Glastonbury (back when it was a hippie
festival) and I saw him approaching me. I tried to avoid him but he
followed me. "That bike you sold me" he said, so I braced myself, but he
continued "It's been brilliant, I've been all over the country on it,
    it's never failed".

But in general, I prefer to sell to strangers:)

I'm buying the RSV from someone I know BTW. But this means I know
exactly what it's been through, hence the attractive price.

    Regards, Ian

  6. *Sigh*

Nothing anybody can do has so far stopped him from buying the most
unlikely, esoteric and shite machinery - he even bought a bike of me,
for God's sake. So I suppose you're both grown-up enough to do this
    thing by yourselves.

But I just *know* that if Timo buys it, within two weeks, the engine
will have rejected all its major components, the eletrics will have
converted themselves to six-volt, and the single most troublesome
component will turn out to have been a factory one-off for which no
    replacement is available.

  7. It's a 1976 Ducati FFS! That lot is built in. I assume any potential
    buyer will realise this.

  8. You don't understand. Timo has this kind of blind that descends across
his brain and his eyes when he's confronted with some horrible old piece
    of Italian industrial archeology.

The same seems to happen with shite old Brit cars, too ;-)

I know, I know, but it feels strange to have a garage full or bikes
that are both road legal and actually working.

Plus, it's Italian, so that was kind of the autonomous reaction you'd
    expect from me...

Heh. Have a look at the archive if you want to see what'll happen.

To save you the work, the most likely outcome is *bang*.

Hmmm. I seem to remember that this was a very good bike. When you
delivered the same verdict on the Triumph, it prompt spit its dummy a
    week later :).
For the record, that mostly happens with bikes from the Far East and
    from Germany.

But of course (a) I don't have the space and (b) it'd probably happen
if I buy a new Honda.

Oi! I don't do 'orrible pieces of Italian industrial archeology. I
prefer to break down in *style*.

Plus for some reason I've had less problems with my Italian antiques
than I've had with most of the other ones, especially the
    'unbreakable' ones...

Well, it does sound better in Dolby Surround, I have to admit...
