Collected the horseradish from the sorting office this morning.

    My, but it's soooo biiggg.

Anyhoo, it's currently recuperating in a pot full of compost on the
    patio.

    Many thanks.

not as yet. It was looking a bit sorry for itself so I thought it
should be planted soonest. Once Shirley realises it's in one of her
decorative glazed pots I expect it'll have to be transplanted soonest,
at which point I'll give it a go.

Does it produce more tap roots, or does one merely hack a lump off?

  4. It produces roots like you wouldn't believe.

Hack a lump off and grate it: the root won't mind.

On a similar note, how does garlic grow into the thing you buy from
    the shops?

I recently stuck a clove into a pot on the windowsill, and it's now
    got a shoot a good 5" high.

It was only when I got to this point that I realised you were talking
about a plant of some sort.

Up until today, horseradish was, to me, something that came in jars.

    Every day's a school day.

I have managed to get a 'bulb' of usable stuff after a particularly good
summer. This year isn't looking too good at the moment veg wise. I only
just got my international kidney, roseval, pixie, home guard and
    charlotte tubers in on Monday.

Also, the sycamore seedlings from next door's tree have gone mental.
Much worse than previous years. They are coming up everywhere. A flame
    thrower offensive is required.

What for, decrepit hotels entirely occupied by wizened old gits who
smell of piss and last laughed in 1958?

Tourist "attractions" that would disgrace Calcutta?

More peeling paint than you'd find in an orange-painting emporium?

Hoteliers who sniff when you check in if you're not a married couple who
    can provide three references. Each?

Restaurateurs who honestly believe that a prawn cocktail is the height
of haute-cuisine and should be fluorescent pink?

    Oh yes.

The Isle of Wight's the place, right enough.

I don't like the Isle of Wight.

This is Champ - I suspect he'll shop in Waitrose but wouldn't notice the
difference if it was Tesco Value Gravy Substitute.

I almost never go to Waitrose, but when I do I'm always appalled at
the prices, and the 'ready meal' mentality. I popped in there today
with the gf, and there was a range of "prepared fruit". Who the ****
needs someone else to prepare their fruit for them?

Jennifer. She gets vouchers for the government to pay for fruit
(nursing mother etc) so doesn't give a toss what it costs as long as
she gets enough vouchers to pay for what she wants to eat.

    4ax.com:

They have those in Lidl & Asda too.

I don't need someone to prepare my fruit but I'd never eat a whole
pineapple before it went off. A little tray with a couple of portions is
handy and a much healthier snack than a packet of jammie dodgers.

Did you not grow up eating prepared fruit from a tin? We used to have
tinned peaches or pineapple with Ideal milk for tea on a Sunday.
