Heh. My late dad would have a tantrum if my mum forgot to buy the "e-vap"
    as he called it.

Oh yes indeed. Never pineapple IIRC, often cling peaches and sometimes
    Bartlett pears.

In defence of Waitrose, I offer their range of stuff. As cooking
interesting food is clearly a closed book to Champ I can understand his
failure to be impressed, but if you want an ingredient that is not main
stream, Waitrose is your best bet.

My thoughts too. I like melons but a whole one would go off before I
ate it all. It is more expensive but less wasteful to buy the prepared
slices when I have the occasional urge. In fact, this very morning I
indulged in slices of melon with ham for breakfast.

It's lucky I resisted the urge to post before reading the whole thread. I
believe I might have ginged otherwise.

Waitrose is also good quality and employee-owned (more or less):
what's not to like. It's not even that expensive, if you're buying
proper food, and they give full measure on their canned tomatoes.

Depends on what you're buying and if you want quality, you have to pay
for it. Most of my veg, I buy at the market.

I've just compared Waitrose canned tomatoes (the one `prepared' food I
    can't do without). They cost 49p a can. Asda charge 42p. That's not a
    huge price difference.
Most supermarkets have the pre-washed, pre-chopped salads. Waitrose
isn't the worst. I've only ever bought intact lettuce there and have
    never had trouble finding it.
I know what eggs they sell and have never had trouble finding `eggs'.

It sounds to me like you're cheesed off at having to navigate a
supermarket you don't normally go to.

    Waitrose Asda
    Tomatoes 49p 42p
    Lettuce 49p 49p
    Spring onions 69p 69p
    Cucumber 80p 80p
    2.5kg potatoes 129p 73p
    1kg white potatoes 149p 138p
    250g back bacon 229p 248p

The only one with a big difference is the 2.5kg bag of
spuds. Otherwise, Waitrose costs the same as Asda or not much more.
The reason I chose Asda for a comparison is that it didn't want me to
register on its site to see the prices.

Oh lordy, your reactionary hat seems to be taking over - time for a
    rant about inheritance tax, maybe?

Are you sure you're not Kerry Katona in disguise? Quails eggs are hardly
exotica, they sell the same ones in Sainsburys (they hard boil easily
enough but don't think about doing as I did and frying them up for a
novelty miniature full english - the shells are really leathery and a
    right **** to crack)

< but you have to search bloody hard to find,
That's because few but the impecunious buy shitty battery farmed eggs
these days. Step out of the 80s, grandad.

(M J Carley) gurgled happily, sounding much like they
    were saying:
And there's probably a quality difference there.

What's the comparison for "branded" (ie not generic "white") potatoes?

    <checks Asda.com>
£1.78 for 2.5kg of Maris Piper or King Edward. 73p is their stripy pikey
    value spuds.

    <checks Waitrose.com>
£2.15 for Maris Piper or £2.29 for King Edward.

Yes, a price difference, but a much smaller %age.

Should add that I'm well pissed off with having to trim so many manky
bits off Tesco's Maris Pipers, which I just don't have to do with
    Waitrose ones.
All in, "usable price" is probably about the same, if not cheaper for
    Waitrose.

    Lifted from another post:

    Waitrose Asda
    Tomatoes 49p 42p
    Lettuce 49p 49p
    Spring onions 69p 69p
    Cucumber 80p 80p
    2.5kg potatoes 129p 73p
    1kg white potatoes 149p 138p
    250g back bacon 229p 248p

Of the ones I looked at (all of them are listed), tomatoes and spuds
are the only ones that are seriously more expensive, so it's not 16%
    on a basket of shopping.

Not if you're Irish. I have never got a satisfactory floury spud in
England. As for `middle class', I've never bought an M+S ready meal.
