    This ebay thing is dangerous...

I've got a sudden need to get another ShiteOldBike down to London from York.
Which means I'll either have to get a van in or find someone in/near York
who'd be willing to store it for a few weeks while I'm trying to sort
myself out with a car that's got a towbar.

Bike is not rideable as it's an unfinished resto - 90% done, the other 90
still need doing - and I don't really fancy riding 200 miles on a
    ShiteOldDirtBike.

  3. It happens that Timo Geusch formulated :
I'm 15 miles your side of York (betwixt Leeds and York), if that might
be of some use? I have no spare under cover storage, but plenty of room
outdoors if that would be suitable and generally it would be safe.

You would have to move it here, or make the arrangements to and it
would strictly be weeks, not months ;-)

    Email me of the list.

    Timo Geusch composed the following;:
I live in Doncaster, about 40 odd miles South of York and have a 3 bike
trailer, a small camping trailer and a Landrover Discovery to tow either
of them with or fill the boot with. If you want to pay diesel I'm sure
    we could arrange something. :)

As I dunno where in York or London I've used Huntington and Coulsdon,
both of which I already have as Pushpins 'cos I go there occasionally,
which coincidentally are North of York and South of London. Autoroute
reckons 520 miles, a full day and £75 diesel, my home to my home ...
South of York (Nunthorpe) and North of London (Edgware Underground)
works out at 420 miles and £55 ... but still reckons a full day ... ;)

Unfortunately we aren't planning to go anywhere near London until
sometime in June, but we have a couple of free weekends coming up.

My reply email is mine and is valid, but I don't check it unless someone
replies on a newsgroup that I've got an email worth checking. ;)

... typo of the month so far, Timo.

Could be uncannily descriptive, though: "small amount of work needed
to complete"; "couple of small parts required for road use"; "little
bit of welding needed to pass MOT" - that sort of thing.

90% done, 90% to go is an excellent definition of many "unfinished
    projects" ;-)

Timo, you mentioned up there ^^^ somewhere about a list of webahites you
have relating to the Mazda rotary lump.. Any chance of a copy?

I'm *so* not going to click on this link after deciding to go all sensible
and buy a nice ShiteOldSAAB instead...

Five minutes later someone offered me another very nice 3rd gen RX-7 and I'm
    not sure I can resist...

    Ah fuggit...

    <clicks on link>

That said, here's my short lis of links:

What I need is somebody to give me a 20B engine, but in the absence of
that a 13B is most promising. Just a nice little runner and half the
weight of the lump that's in there. That, combined with an alloy-cased
transmission from the RX-7 will go a long way to bettering the bhp/lb
    figure.

There's a mega-breakers not a million miles from me; I'll have to go and
root around and see if he ever gets rotaries in.
    You're doomed now.
Ta; some of them look useful.

The trouble with rotaries from breakers is - unless the car was involved in
an accident, you've got three guesses as to why it's there.

    The first two don't count.
    I was *born* doomed...
Especially the engine rebuilders, although I wasn't that happy with the
Hurley engine in the one I had - I had expected it to last longer but that
was probably a muppet PO problem rather than anything else.

The most useful resource I came across was the Mazda Rotary club
    messageboard.

Oh yes, there's a mega chance any lump I find cheaply will need a
rebuild and the kits ain't cheap. Still, a piston engine rebuild these
days isn't cheap to do it properly
It blew up? Or just start smoking like an urchin?
Actually, seeing as how I'm new to the hands-on of rotaries, it would be
useful to get a feel of how much wear and smoke is tolerable.

    Grimly Curmudgeon says...
The best metaphor I ever read to describe an engine smoking badly came
from a Bike Magazine test of the 1980 Kawasaki KE175D2:

"When started from cold it smokes like an early morning picket line"

AFAIK rebuilding it isn't that bad a job, problem is mostly to work out if
the combustion chamber sideplates and the rotors are still useable.

Plus you may well use the rebuilder's expertise to get the engine ported
    slightly for your application.
Low compression on the rear rotor after less than 20k (but about 8 years).
Forget about the smoke - when they don't want to idle at their usual speed
(around 6-700) and don't like starting either hold or cold or both, go and
find two grand. Same if it shakes at its regular idle - it should run very,
very smooth. A puff of smoke at startup is normal on these engines, plus
they'll always use oil as they're designed to do so.

Only way to assess its health is getting a compression test done - these
engines still feel powerful and pull like mad even with low compression.
Just one day, you'll find it won't start or won't idle.
