Paging Wordsmiths

You think you've got problems. I've got 5 or so people keep asking me if
I've remembered it yet to put them out of the misery I put them in by asking
them.

 

It's much less run of the mill that that. I've only ever read it once.

 

Is there a word for a long rambling question from the floor intended to
demonstrate
how clever the questioner is but which just makes everyone else think he
's a jerk?

 

Eironism?

 

How long ago was it Word of the Day (wordsmith.org, right?)? I have
the last 11 months archived.

 

No, what you get from an eiron is irony. Didn't you get a classical
education?

 

What me? Good lord no. I had to count Geography as the extra Arts
O-Level (other than English) needed to meet the Uni entrance
requirements.

 

I used to work with someone like that. IT conferences, up goes his
hand. Long rambling fruitiness ensues, ending with a question designed
to extract admission of errors. All IT analysts look at each other and
shrug - we all know the answer already anyway and he just looks like a
twat for showing off.

So there's your answer - showing off.

Why would anyone think I'm clever for forgetting a word? Surely the only
conclusion that could be drawn is that I'm interested in words and I'm at
least slightly forgetful.

 

I already thought of that and have been through Dictionary.com's word of the
day archives for the last few months.
