The FAA did everything they could to get that bloke out of a cockpit and
    IIRC, they eventually managed it.

They (the FAA) don't like individuals who don't conform, but Hoover was
regarded by many as "The man" when it came to energy management wrt to
    aircraft.

The situation was not as simple as many would have us believe.
He failed a medical following a period of alcohol abuse which led
to the loss of his FAA licence. He later dried out and was granted
an Australian licence but this did not qualify him to fly in the USA.
He eventually regained his FAA licence but he could not get the
required insurance for display flying and retired.

An absolutely marvellous guy and arguably the best exponent of precision
    flying ever.

Now 87 years old, he is enjoying a quiet retirement.
