Have a personalised one and was wondering instead of paying heaps of
dollars to the RTA why not get a sign painter to touch it up in the
colour you want ? I have white on black and was thinking of hot pink on
    black .......

Illegal ? but would all the plods know or the different colour schemes
    available ?

Why I am on it, local bike shop doesnt have them but I want to get a
number plater holder ... one that is sealed and you just put you plate
in and then attach that to the bike .. saw a couple a while ago and
they looked good but have no idea on where to get them . Any ideas ?

What do you do for a living?

What small things most people don't give a shit about are part of your
job and you know about them to a detail most don't?

You would be denying the NSW taxpayers of your easy-earned dollars.
Bound to be illegal. So then again..go ahead.... the fine should more
than make up for the loss of revenue to RTA.
Send me a hundred bucks and I'll post you a ziplock bag.

actually it would be case of picking a colour that is legal and doing it
    myself

have a better idea , put it over your head and lock it tight

what I dont do is practice been a bitch
Its simple, sometimes one small thing attracts them and they then find
    more things and more things.

Thankfully I purchased my plates many years ago before the RTA started
charging exorbitant fees especially annual ones.

anyway, more interested in getting an enclosed number plate holder then
painting ( but will end up doing silver on black maybe ), have seen them
on bikes and they look real good. local bike shop doesnt have anything
remotely like what I want and the only ones they have dont match
personalised plates ie. the plates are not wide enough

btw: just to get lime green instead of white letters $200

any signwriter would do it for less then $50

It's the NSW State guvvament thingy trying to create value so they can
give away more power stations for peanuts.

It's not an issue of a legal colour..it's an issue of who is
authourised to issue registration plates. In NSW that is the RTA under
    the relevant Regulation.

    If RTA didn't issue a plate..no matter how perfect a copy..it's
illegal and 20 penalty points or something.

Victoria is a bit different if you have a trailer which is under the load
    limit
e.g 6'x4', or smaller, under 750kg capacity single axle and no wider than
    the towing vehicle,
    can be towed without registration
but, you have to have the car's registration plate number on the back of the
trailer, which you obviously, make yourself.
I have had the same trailer for 40 years, different plates of coarse, but
all made with my artistic little hands

    Yep. same.

    Unauthorised number plates
VicRoads warns custom plates users that the display on a vehicle of
number plates that have not been issued by VicRoads is an offence
under the Road Safety (Vehicles) Regulations 2009.

Police and authorised VicRoads officers have power to seize any number
plate they have reasonable grounds for suspecting was not issued in
accordance with the Road Safety Act.

A person who makes, uses, knowingly has custody or possession of,
sells or alters any identifying number or general identification mark
that is authorised or required under the Road Safety Act is guilty of
an offence punishable by a fine of 10 penalty units or imprisonment
    for two months.

  12. Stop talking crap Nev
You change the story to suit yourself
Your claim about "Irrelevant stories about trailers snipped" is bullshit
because it is relevant to what was being discussed.

If you wish to do a check on this issue, (but I would suspect you don't
because you will find out the right answer),

Cut and pasted from VicRoads web site:

Under certain circumstances and depending on the vehicle type, a vehicle may
    not need to be registered.
    These include:

a.. agricultural equipment - vehicles without automotive power built to
perform agricultural tasks off road such as, cultivating land, growing and
    harvesting crops and rearing livestock.
    b.. trailers carrying harvester combs
c.. bulk field bins for holding grain
    d.. bulk fruit bins
e.. trailers (other than trailers specifically built to carry a boat) that
is not used in the course of trade and:
    - weighs less than 200 kilograms empty
    - is not wider than the vehicle towing it
    - is not more than 3 metres long including the drawbar and any load on the
    trailer
f.. trailers that are being towed by a registered tow truck
g.. motor vehicles being towed on a highway

These are vehicles that are not considered to be motor vehicles by law and
therefore are also not required to be registered.

Also, if you wish to check further, and call them, that is if you know how
to use a telephone, then you will be told that any type of plate can be
used, it can be painted on the rear of the trailer or on a plate made and
painted by the owner or anyone else, as long as it is:
The same number which the towing vehicle is registered with
and as long as it is visible from 20 metres.

As I said, but you refuse to acknowledge.
I have been driving with the same trailer for 45 years with a hand made hand
painted number plate, as is it is legal in Victoria to do so.

  13. In what way is an assertion (whether true or not) about registering, and
hand painting numberplates for, a trailer in Victoria, relevant to
painting a number plate for a motor cycle in New South Wales?

Take it to aus.trailer if you're passionate about it.

  14. Whether it be a trailer or motorcycle or car number plate is irrelevant
the discussion was about hand painted home made number plates

No, it wasn't. The discussion is about changing the colours of a Gov't
    issued numberplate by painting it.

    The answer is no.

I do understand that people in Vic can drive around with unregistered
trailers and can make their own plate as a copy of the plate on their car. I
would strongly advise you do not attach that home-made plate to your car,
should you lose one of the Gov't issued ones. I have had discussions with a
country Vic copper re the lack of numberplate on a motorcycle trailer. The
trailer was purchased in SA and we had a 30 day permit to tow it back to WA.
We told him he had no jurisdiction over our trailer and that it complied
with the regulations of the permit issuing State. He said he could charge us
and make us appear before the local beak. We laughed. He left.

Once upon a time in SA it was legal to make your own plates for any vehicle
as long as the number was issued to you by the authorities. That was when
you could get a vehicle licensed without presenting the vehicle. You could
do it by mail even. But even then you had to use the standard colours a
Gov't issued plate would be. That is no longer the case.

  16. Apparently it's ok as long as you have the word "TRAFIC" painted on the
    plate.

Note the spelling - ONLY ONE "F" - if you spell it "traffic," it'll be
    illegal.

  18. A motorcycle trailer is a little bit different Theo, they have to be
    registered in Vic
But, why did you travel through Victoria to get to W.A.
when you bought the trailer in South Aastralia?

    No wonder you get lost,
not only on the road, but in discussions as well.

And they were the days of beautiful looking plates
White or cream plastic with black plastic cut-out numbers
    Looked really nice

Did you miss that we had a 30 day permit?
We picked it up on the way to Philip Island.
    Some people are truly lost.

    Philip Island
