the other day, I was going through some old floppies to find an old
file and saw that one of the disks had the parity boot virus. I wanted
the file that was there though, so I got it and then threw away the
floppy. My PC told me sternly to boot up from a clean disk - of
course, I haven't got any disks to boot from. Since then, I've had no
problems. Does modern Windows (I'm on 98 I think) deal with this on
    its own?

Normally your BIOS would have prevented anything untoward happening. If it
didn't then your AV software would have. If neither of these happened,
then you might have a problem.
