  5. ISTR that the Galaxy was intended to be made in "civilian" versions too,
but its accident record was so bad that it never happened.

Paging the aircraft freaks. Weggy? What say you?

  6. The C5 and the 747 were in a US military fly off to decide who would
supply the next big freight transport. Hence both have the overhead
cockpits with a clear cargo deck. Swing up noses and in the 747's case I
think it was a swing sideways tail.

Lockheed C5 won as the stronger aircraft. The 747 failed as the nose
gear and supporting fuselage was deemed too weak.

After it won the C5 needed a total wing spar redesign to stop the wings
falling off after 1000 cycles (at a huge cost).

Boeing took its failed transport and turned it into a world beating
passenger plane that often gets scraped because the nose wheel punches
up through the fuselage on a heavy landing.

That squares with what a former colleague once told me. Apparently
they didn't operate anywhere near the original design specification
for payload except in times of war. Mind ewe, that's probably "always"
    nowadays.

Presumably they no longer have that restriction?

This guy was an NCO in US airbase security and came out with some
fascinating tales and factoids about US aircraft.

  9. One would hope not.
Wright brothers first flight could have taken place in its hold with out
    opening the doors.

It holds the world record for the number of passengers taken. I think it
was over 1200 children and mothers as the last flight out of Saigon when
the sh*t hit the fan for the US.

The ANTONOV AN-225 is a bigun. I watched it when I thought it was
taxiing at a Farnborough air show. Then it rotated and climbed out.
