Parking lights

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by George W Frost, Jun 9, 2009.

  1. During my years of driving cars, motorcycles, trucks, and busses, both
during the day and night, in sunshine, wind, rain, snow, fog and anything
else you encounter, I have come to the conclusion that drivers of today are
dumb and don't really know the workings of a car .
In particular, this time, I will emphasize the headlights and parking
    lights.
Now, you will notice that I said, "parking lights", which are for parking,
not for saving the battery during a fog or dawn or dusk light, if you have
it in your area, in particular fog.
I notice, that many drivers, including some commercial delivery vehicles,
travelling in a heavy fog with piddly little parking lights on instead of
their headlights, taking into consideration that a lot of cars today are a
light colour and blend into the background very well with a fog.

It used to be when my grandfather was driving his model "A", that during a
fog or twilight, they would have their parking lights on to save the
accumulator, because the generator system of those days were not the best,
but, not these days, we have alternators some of which pump out 50 amps up
to 100 amps virtually on idle.
Now, you have a light coloured car or truck, looming out of a fog about 50
metres away from you with piddly little parking lights,
They can see you because you are doing the right thing to be seen and you
have your headlights on, yet if you happen to collide with them, they blame
you because you didn't see them as they had their lights on, albeit little
lights that you can only just make out are on, even at the best of times.
Different thing I know, with large trucks, semis, B Doubles and Triples,
they have red and white running lights all the way from front to back top to
bottom and can be seen, but a small average sized car with 2 watt parking
light globes just cannot be seen, that is until you are right on top of
    them.

I think it is time for the coppers to start doing something about lights on
cars and there should be questions asked at point of licence application
about the use of parking lights, or maybe, have the car makers delete them
from the cars altogether, because the are of no real use, except for parking
at the side of a street in the night, where it was a law years ago, that if
you were parking in the street, you must have your parking lights on at all
    times from dusk to dawn.

But, don't get me started on cars with headlights which are not aligned or
out of focus or one light out
    that is for another day

A common complaint George, my view is people do things deliberately, as
they wish to piss people off, *because* they know its stupid, and driving
poorly IS a national pastime in Australia, example; many admit to say
speeding up to deliberately cut someone off, depending on how they feel at
    the time.

So it is with lights off or the mere in lousy visibility weather, or those
that simply use the 12v5watt parkers.

I blame speed-centric enforcement for one, but poor behaviour on the roads
is some peoples way of expressing anger or resistance against a percieved
and real myroad of national issues.

Good idea but IMO not much hope of it happening when very often Police
are committing the same offence, I blame poor driver education.

  4. Yes, and that is the thought of lots of drivers but some use parking lights

Doesn't make it thicker, makes it more dense

Yellow is easier to see in the fog

Can't work out your reasoning here
    you say:
then you say the entire opposite:

  5. CROSSPOSTING RESTORED BECAUSE THIS BELONGS IN BOTH GROUPS AS IT HAS TO WITH
    DRIVING

Unfortunately, a lot of drivers take your thoughts into a working idea,
except that anyone who drives with parking lights are hard to see in a fog
or half light of dawn or dusk.
    Driving lights are driving lights
    parking lights are parking lights

    there is your problem George...

uneducated, selfish and stupid people who think they are right and
continue to do things that are conceived wrong by the majority of
people except the other uneducated, selfish and stupid people....

swap parking lights for crossposting and visa versa and you might just
    get it... but probably not

    btw.. I "ride" a bike

I don't give a **** what you ride or drive
    I ride a bike also
Yet it appears that you are not troubled by light coloured cars in a fog
    with only parking lights on?
When one of them hits you you will be the one screaming the loudest

I've always wondered why at dusk, cars put on their parkers first, then
as it gets a bit darker, their headlights.

If you need light, why not go straight to headlights?...

In the same vein - am I the only one getting the shits with the
dickheads driving cages at night with the high-intensity fog lights
    switched on?

I remember seeing a quote from the NSW cops that they were going to
"blitz" people using fog lights when it was not foggy - must have been
the same blitz on cagers using mobile phones or women (and some guys)
    applying make-up in traffic.

Isn't your complaint that they're going to hit YOU ?

If you hit something then you're riding too fast for conditions and it's
    your fault then.

For when a vehicle's parked, and stationary!
They're **** all use for anything else (as the OP pointed out). :)

  15. Yeebok, I have been riding bikes for probably as long as you have been on
    this earth
My original argument was the use of parking lights in a fog
    Get your facts right boy

  16. Precisely Nigel, but I don't think you are the only one getting the shits.
The Victorian Police also announced that they were going to have a blitz on
the same things, but nothing has become of it, well nothing has been
reported in the news as yet, they may have held a blitz, but it may have
been reported by some little female reporter on Today Tonight with the
    emphasis put on male drivers.
I see every day, countless drivers using mobile phones while driving through
roundabouts, turning corners or on the highways,
though haven't come across any male drivers applying make-up while driving,
then again, I don't live in Sydney.

    To quote you, George :

How about using them when parked, especially if you are only parked
short term in an area with poor visibility.

So wouldn't full headlights be safer and more visible than parkers? Why
    the intermediate step?

  20. So the bikies have a better chance of being seen, Doug.
