Parking on a hill?

    Anyone here live on a hill?
    Tonight I just dropped my bike for the second time on my driveway and I
    looking for solutions.
    My street is on a hill and my driveway is sloped and I don't have an
    automatic door opener.
    So each day I come up the driveway, try and find the flatest spot possible
    to leave the bike, get off and open the garage door, then ride in. Most of
    the time I get it right but every now and again I'll hop off, the bike
    stays, I take one step away and over she goes.
    Apart form parking a couple of hundred metres away from the house, is there
    any easier way to do this?

    You currently trying to leave it facing up/down the hill, or along it?

    Tried all 3.
    Facing up the hill ends up with the bike rolling down the hill, even witht
    he stand down,
    Sideways one way the hill is too steep so there's too much weight on the
    stand. Th other way the bike doesn't lean over so falls the other way.

    1. Park it in such a way that gravity can't work against you, so you want the
    front right hand side of the bike uphill and the rear left hand side on the
    downhill. Which way does the drive slope, L-R or R-L. Do you ride in
    forwards or back the bike in?

    2. When you are getting off keep a hold on the handlebars till you're
    completely off the bike and apply some pressure the the left handlebar before
    you let go so you're confident it's not going to move.

    3. Move to a flatter neighbourhood.

    Wheel chock and park on an angle.

    My driveway I use to have was the same, I use to have a brick on the side, I
    would come in turn the bike on an angle, and have the brick their to stop me
    rolling, open the automatic garage door then ride in. Then I learnt I could
    carry the door opener in my tank bag map pocket and just press it.

    Turn it off and leave it in gear.

    I know it's an extra little bit of a pain but (as you now know) it's worth
    it!
    (It cost me $500 when I let my Sprint roll off the sidestand on the
    driveway!)

    Leave it in first gear
    Anyone ever heard of a bike falling over because there's "too much weight on
    the stand"? I doubt there's much extra weight transferral from the wheels
    over to the stand if both wheels are still on the ground and the bike is
    leaning onto the stand... any physicist out there care to have a go at the
    calculations ?

    It doesn't fall over the stand as such, becuase of the sharp anlge it just
    takes too much weight off one of the wheels, then pivots on the stand, loses
    any traction it had and over it goes. This is how I lost it the first time.

    I take it you are leaving the bike running while you open the garage door
    etc? Otherwise, just put it in first gear, let the clutch out, take up all
    the drivetrain slack then put it on the sidestand. Open the garage door etc,
    then start the bike again when you need to move it. If the driveway is also
    sloped higher to lower, from left to right say, then turn a bit to the left
    when you do this as well.

  11. The VTR has punched a hole in bitumen a few times now (with out being on
    tour)!

    Hammo (the 13 has a bit welded to its foot to stop it happening too)

  13. The K was like that. Pivot over the sidestand. Only bike I've had that's
    ever fallen over on it's left side while on the stand - and not from
    rolling off the stand either.

    Put it the other way, and she'd quite easily fall over on the right
    side.

  16. Errmmm, let me get this straight.

    You stop your bike on a sloped surface, leave it running and in neutral,
    then it rolls away and falls over? And you've done this at least twice
    in the same spot?

    *boggle!*

    Here's a hint, if you stop the motor and leave it in gear, it won't roll
    away!

    I had the same problem years ago with my GS1000S, what I did was I made a
    box in steel with an angled bottom to suit the slope so the top was level
    put a small lip 10mm on it and bolted it with dyna bolts to the driveway.
    The box was only about 50mm high but it stopped the bike from falling over.
    My hill was mostly side ways and a little downhill and the driveway sloped
    until it got to the garage door. Failing that put in a door opener it will
    cost less than fixing the bike all the time.

    No the times it fell over it was parked sideways.
    The first time it fell over the stand (ie stand on the low side of the
    slope)
    The second time it was sitting near verticle and just tipped over the other
    way (stand on the high side)
    Both times I stood next to the bike ready to catch it and it stayed. It
    wasn't till I went to walk off that it went over.

    Yeah I tried that today and it works good. I was always too lazy to turn it
    off and back on again.

  19. I'd fall back and regroup.....save up and buy a remote garage door opener.
    It sounds like that would be the best solution.

    Nah... if he had a magnetic personality the bike would be drawn towards
    him and fall over when he was close... obviously he is seriously
    repellant! The bike won't fall on him because he repells it... as it
    walks away his repellant nature has less effect :) [1]
