Pattern Brake pads quality. WTB

  1. Is there a quality pecking order between Ferodo, EBC & Nissen(sp) pads?

I wouldn't think that there is a quality difference as such - none of
them are going to rip, slip or turn inside out. The days of friction
material tearing away from the backing plate are gone, afaik. The
three names you mention will be of decent manufacturing quality, but
you may wish to investigate the compound differences, depending on
    your application.

I will never use the cheap and cheerless EBC Green pads again, after
suffering near-terminal brake fade following a single hard application
from 140mph on my RF900. Others may warn you away from the EBC HH
compound as they are known to abrade disc steel.

  3. Funnily enough I'm asking this question because a mate's just had
exactly that happen to a Nissen pad. Admittedly following riding with a
    binding brake for ~100 miles.

However you've confirmed my pre-conceived view that they'll all be much
of a muchness. I shall purchase some Ferodo's today.

Just out of interest are there any HH pads that don't wear the disc out
    in five minutes flat?

  4. Vesrah sintered pads do fine in stopping my B12 from eek speeds with me
    onboard.

  5. Do they toast the discs though? Last set of HH pads I bought turned my
front wheel into a lathe that machined my discs thinner.

  6. Not so far. Google it and see what others may have experienced.

You may wish to consider Carbon Lorraines:

  8. Or Brembo, perhaps Bentix but probably not Galfer.

    we're not helping are we?

    Wot 'e says.

We use either OEM Brembo (to mate with Brembo calipers
and disks) or Carbone Lorraine pads, as we've found these
to be the best for (a) stopping and (b) continuing to stop.

They are more expensive than EBC, but for the amount
of times that you need to change them and them being
the one bit of your bike that you *really* don't want to go
wrong, it really is a no-brainer.

Check ebay as they sometimes come up for sale on the
cheap - usually old stock that has been snapped up or
not shifted. I got a set (2 pairs / 4 pads) for my Brembos
from there for £13 plus £6 delivery, and each pair was
    marked as £34!

I'd say that riding with a binding brake constitues abnormal use and
    failure could be expected.
Five minutes is a bit swift. All pads wear all discs and a lot
depends on your particular application and riding style.

Either Carbone Lorraine SBK3 compound[1] or Vesrah JL sintered compound
will do the job nicely without toasting discs.

[1] Don't use the A3+ compound pads, they aren't up to the job. They
    feel like EBC greens.

  12. Yup. ....but you can see why it would lead me to double check with the
FOAK that I'm not buying tat when I wander into the dealer today and by
    some Ferodos.

I know two people who have had that happen with EBC HH on Tigers within
    the last few years.

    <snip>

The friction material fell away from the backplate on the rear pad of my
F650 over 12 months or so ago. They were EBC pads. However, to their credit
once I sent the pads back to them EBC replaced them with two genuine BMW pad
    sets as compensation.

I've used HH's in the Gixxer thou (before AP's), K's, Boxers, Bandits
(9R front end) and they all benefited hugely. The Gixxer and K disks
showed higher wear, the others seem fine.

My Bindit has EBC HH front pads[1] and I have kept an eye on disc wear.
Over 6,000 miles the part-worn front discs have worn by a futher .9mm.
They'll be lucky to last as long as the pads at this rate.

[1] They were all I could find and I wanted the bike on the road asap,
    plus they were Lozzo-cheap.

Aha. I recently fitted CL pads to the TL after hearing people raving
about them. So far, completely underwhelmed.

Unfortunately, the A3+ ones are the first type that one scrolls to on
Buster's website, so that's probably what I got.

    Arse.

I take it they're the non-HH pad EBC do? If they are, they lasted three
moderate applications on an SV before refusing to do any more.

They're also the reason why I will never use ESB Motorcycles in Leigh,
who swapped my OEM HH pads for those during a service, without telling
me, even though both Suzuki and EBC say the SV should have sintered/HH
    pads.

The fuckers took the piss and wouldn't sort out the problem
afterwards[1], despite having the evidence in front of them.

    [Butts in.]

I've got CL A3's on my Thunderace. Naff. They squeal all the time
too. Time to do a total front brake rebuild I think. New seals
everywhere, new disks [1] and new SBK3's. Hoses already Goodridge.

[1] But What discs are the most effective ones? [2] Not prettiest,
effective. OEM? Wavy? Slotted? Any brand or materiel? I once had a
brand new Ace and it did stoppies with two gentle fingers on OEM kit.

[2] And where's cheapest to buy?
