PC's recent CD purchases

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Corfield, Mar 17, 2006.

  1. Highlights from recent CD buying forays include

    Ryan Adams - 29
    Sparks - Hello Young Lovers
Corinne Bailey Rae - Corinne Bailey Rae
    Ordinary Boys - Brassbound
    Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
Madonna - Confessions on a dancefloor
Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams are made of this
Artic Monkeys - Whatever people say I am, that's what I'm not
    Various Artists - 12" 80s Dance
    Neil Diamond - 12 songs

If the Rick Rubin produced Johnny Cash albums are to your taste then you
will enjoy the Neil Diamond album - very good indeed.

The Eurythmics is very much a rediscovery as I bought it years ago on
vinyl but the songs are still great.

I shall now await the routine abuse ;-)

Not keen on the Ordinary Boys. I thought I'd like it but it's a bit
    easy-listening for me.

Arctic Monkeys is a good album. If you like that, try Franz Ferdinand's
You could have it so much better; very similar in style and an album I
    listen to loads.

  3. Well it sort of takes me back to the 80s and I liked the ska / mod type
stuff that was popular back then. There are obvious similarities.
FF are in the pile somewhere. I was a little tentative about the Artic
Monkeys as I hadn't heard any of their stuff and I'm always a bit
cautious about bands that have an aura of hype about them. Nonetheless
    it's a decent album.

Mardy Bum is a good track, but I doubt it'll ever be released as a
    single

    They've been famous for ages.

Like Chumbawumba, they had decent shit out and when suddenly they were
launched into the charts it all turned to shit. Still, like you say the
    Arctics are a good band.

Sitting in my play.com shopping trolley at the moment, is it any good?
And this one, any good? I like Fiona but I haven't got this one.

  7. [snip music stuff]
I like most types of music but my knowledge in some areas is woeful.
You're out of touch? I'm hardly "in touch" these days. I find myself
muttering like my parents used to do about some of the stuff in the
charts. Boy does *that* make me feel old! I couldn't tell you what the
current number 1 even sounds like but I suspect I am not missing very
    much.

I try to keep in touch through Q and Mixmag magazines and will admit to
be being "steered" by some of their reviews. I'm rarely disappointed but
I imagine others would be if their tastes are narrower than mine.

Ms Apple has been around for many years and is far bigger in the States
than here. You could put her in the "kookie female piano playing
vocalist" mould like Tori Amos but that's not a negative as far as I'm
concerned. I've only discovered the Ordinary Boys courtesy of their
latest track being flogged on the sat TV music channels. I took a punt
on the album based on the single which is a risk these days but it
    turned out OK.
Well I'm not a musician like you so perhaps I wouldn't be quite so
scathing. You can't survive on sophistication the whole time so short,
rocky enthusiastic tunes have their place and the AMs seem to do those
    rather well.
I used to like the Kerrang music channel because it did try to champion
the more obscure rock stuff - some of which I rather like. However as
with all of the music channels the lure of advertising revenue is such
that the playlist culture arrives thus reducing the riskiness of the
    music.

Home taping is killing music, everybody knows that ;)

  9. Oh yes. A nice mix of soul and funky stuff. A distinctive voice - not
    unlike Meshell Ndegeocello.
Some stand out tracks where her views on life and men might make you
want to cover your crotch! An interesting mix of tunes of styles - I
    liked it.

If a CD makes it onto the "highlights" list you can rest assured that I
think it's a good record. To say I buy a lot of CDs might be an
understatement - not all of them reach a post to the group!

Quality album this, constantly on the iPod, plus it was only $9.99
from Virgin in San Fran. Who says we live in Rip Off Britain, eh?
