They're having a drive-in built and like our house theirs is about 6
foot above road level and they have had the front garden dug away to
within a couple of foot of the house. On clay. I know the founds on
these 30s built houses are all of about 18" deep so I'm thinking this
may not be a good idea. I'm watching with interest.

  4. Oh goody. Iiwy, I'd have a webcam or small surveillance cam on 24/7
watch to catch the falling house front. Might earn a couple of quid too.

This reminds me of the nutter who dug out the sloping front garden to
give himself a basement garage. Yes, his house collapsed, but it took
the neighbouring houses with it, it being a terrace.

The son of my gran's next door neighbour was keen to turn the two
downstairs rooms into one, excavating away at the foundation in the
half-height cellar. The whole thing collapsed leave a huge crack
running the height of what was now an external wall on my gran's house.
My gran was dead and buried sevral years later before their bastard
insurers paid up a pittance which we had to use to put the house back
    into a sellable state...

Jeez I thought we lived near Mo then as we had our drive dug up
today...until read about the 6 foot above road bit.

    *phew*

still, I'm glad I didn't go on the bike today, I'd never have got it
    to the garage.

Not yet, but our back garden has a much lower retaining wall which was
built 10 years ago. That now has a 2" tilt on it and unlike the wall
in the photo it really is 1 brick thick not a 1/2 brick with a full
brick capping.) and it hasn't got a house built 2 foot away from it
either. Now that the soil has been removed from the pair of semis, I
suspect that will destabilise them further.

Try lifting one foot off the ground. You can stand still and not fall down.
Now try lifting the second foot....

  12. The utter twat. If it had been me I'd have sunk corrugated pilings in
front of the house and then excavated. The forward bursting force might
not be huge, but it'll be there. I trust you'll keep us informed when it
does go, even if it takes a couple of years?

Wonder if the excavation at the house next to it were prior to 1997.

It will one day unless there's a serious retaining wall with proper
buttresses behind the bricks. I'd want to see concrete blocks laid on
their side forming a wall 9" thick, tied to the brick front with decent
    drainage holes

Today it's been slightly shored up with a few scaffold poles and a
couple of sheets of compressed chipboard, I'm not sure if that means
they have already seen a problem.

Presumably then, each house owner has served the appropriate notice
under the terms of the legislation on the other. and has given consent
for the works proposed. "We'll all go together when we go" - no
    incandescent glow required..

I saw a Beeb headline about a collapsed house earlier and clicked to see
    if it was "yours".

    Quite disappointed, I was.
