You might still manage 5km/h pushing a CT90, but I'd like to see how you
go pushing something with some real weight to it! :)

Yep, 1.55 for bog standard ULP at the big roundabout between Port and
Wauchope (first day of sun in weeks and I'm stuck in the cage..)

    Nice avoidance of my point.

And I'll have you know that I managed to coast at 50km/h for 5km at a
time on my GPZ900 while I was coming home from the GP!

(Via Buchan-Suggan Buggan-Jindabyne, of course. I'd not like to push
*any* motorbike up Jacob's Ladder though!)

Well yeah but that's a totally seperate piece of the tax act.

The excise taxes on petrol, smokes and alcohol are seperate to the
loophole slipped in by Fraser that exempted what were at the time
vehicles pretty much only used for primary production from the sliding
scale of taxes applied to cars. Fair enough - they were pretty much
trucks back then an few would choose them to run the kids to school if
they didn't have to. Played well with the Nat's constituency though.
Keating never axed it for some reason (was recommended in the Button
report IIRC). Only really became an issue because the US had something
similar and that saw the huge rise in luxury "SUV's" over there which
translated into a growing market in Toorak tractors here.

In short if I import say a BMW 5 series for say 75K wholesale, it'll get
say 30K in luxury tax whacked on it (as well as GST) (1). The X5 which
is pretty much the same car just jacked up in the air will land for
about the same wholesale price, but only get the GST added so it's 30K
cheaper just because it's a "truck" according to the vehicle
definitions. What does a rational consumer buy ? In most cases they'll
take the 4WD. I don't like it but I can't blame them. The answer is
simple - cancel the general exemption, and then allow real primary
producers to get a specific exemption. The libs would never do it
because of the backlash in Mosman/Toorak etc, I'm hoping Rudd & co. will.

That of course ignores people like GS who have a business need to have
tanks of diesel and hence it REALLY pays off to have a diesel "truck"
for a tax deductible business runabout(2)

    JL
1 I've not looked up the exact tax rate but it used to be about 30% tax
on any car over about $55K
    2 Or a diesel car...

As Kerry Packer said, "Of course I minimise my taxes. Anyone who doesn't
minimise their taxes is an idiot". I drive a 4x4 ute, at least partly
because of tax implications. It does get better fuel consumption (9.5/100)
than my previous smaller ute and most Commodores.

If there was a serious tax incentive to supply our staff with Moto Guzzis,
bicycles, or Sedgways, we would. But the tax-sensible thing to do is 4x4
    utes.

So Fraser was not a visionary, is that news to you? :)
I'm pretty sure we paid Luxury car tax when we bought the ML.

Rudd made the price of fuel go up? Next you'll be telling me Howard was
responsible for 13 consecutive interest rate rises.

    I can winge.
When I finally got the superboike running yesterday, It only had a few
thimbles of fuel left, so I went straight to the only servo nearby.
    $1.67 / l. I was a little startled, but I hadn't bought petrol on a
sunday or ages (hadn't bought petrol for ages) so I steeled myself and
    filled up.
Waiting at the till, I overhear the cashier on the phone.... "What is
that you say? it's Diesel that's supposed to be $1.67? So what about
unleaded? $1.43? I'll change it shortly...."

"No, sorry sir, you have to pay what it said on the pump when you took
    the petrol."

But it is the compounding of wee patches over other patches on top of
special deals that **** up the tax system. :-(

If farmers actually need to have a 4x4 to run about in, they can claim
it. They don't need to get it cheap.

OTOH, my tax dodge is not making any money in the first place. <shrug>

An unfortunate interpretation of contract law, I expect. I wonder what
a decent defence lawyer would do with it. I suspect that it would be a
difficult fight, even though the moral argument is real.

If it happened to me, I'd tell him he's full of shit and demand he get
his act together. If he refused to accept my money, I'd call the police.
That's what they'd do if the roles were reversed after all. No way I'd
    pay it though.

Nothing to do with contract law. If you go into any other retailer and
take a product and find at the checkout that the price is wrong, they
fix it up and charge you the correct price - what is it about servos
that makes them so special that they can do the wrong thing and just get
away with it? Absolutely nothing, that's what. They only get away with
things like this when people let them. As I said before, stand your
ground, and just call the police if you need to - it might only be a few
dollars to you, but how much does it add up to if they get a few hundred
people through the pumps before the "mistake" was picked up? I'm all for
businesses making a profit - even oil companies - but outright fraud and
theft (by deceit/incompetence) is taking it way to far.
