As my photo licence is ten years old I've had to send an up to date photo
plus £20 (and licence incl. paper part) to the DVLA.

Although I'm not expecting any problems I scanned both parts of the
licence before posting just so I had a record of my entitlements. If the
worst did happen and some entitlements had gone I'm now wondering if the
DVLA would accept the scanned copy as proof.

I've just sent mine away for change of address and did the same thing.
    Probably not.

No. This has been discussed here and in the media. Featured on Watchdog
    too.

Seems you will need a legal document, so scans authenticated by a notary,
    JP, GP etc might work

Yes but they need to copy the original. They will then stamp and notarise it
    which should be sufficient.
I carry a notarised copy of passport and licence now. Stops Gendarmes having
    the original away.

Nope, reckon the best thing to do is lose your licence a year or so
before renewal and get a replacement. If there's a problem then
miraculously finding the lost licence would be a winner.

I just "lost" mine prior to sending my £20 tax and new photo.
I miraculously found it again after my new license arrived and all was
    correct.

I've said it before and I'll say it again.

The only sure way is to "lose" the original and then, if there are
problems with the replacement, you may be lucky enough to find it again.
That way you have a genuine licence to prove your entitlement.

Don't they demand an original license as proof? Which is pretty fucking
    stupid...

As a Type 1 sugar mong, my license only runs for 3 years before I have to
renew it, so I'm 3 times more likely to suffer the DVLA incompetence so I
*never* send the old license back, insisting instead that it was lost or
    mislaid.

No problems of any kind doing that and (so far) no problems with lost
entitlements, but having a genuine old license to use as evidence of my
entitlements isn't a bad thing to have.

I know they will now send your old license back if you ask for it and
provide a stamped addressed envelope (the new license comes from a different
department from the "returned" licenses) but they could still easily "lose"
    your old one.

What, being a three years only license holder? Commiserations.
