    Veggie Dave wibbled forthrightly:
I've never understood why the Merkins often show the stars on the
"stars and stripes" on the top right of the flag.

Because I was replying to Lozzo's post which said:
    (And here's the relevant bit)
In that post, I think it is fair to assume he's not referring
*exclusively* to the Elefant. So, my reply is about using a
SOB/unreliable POS for a "distance" trip *in general*. I thought you
might have understood that - or is this thread an exception to general
UKRM practice and not allowed to drift off-topic in the slightest?

Then you told me I hadn't "quite grasped the reason for taking shite
old bikes to the Elefant". I assume that my general reply to Lozzo
covers part of it and my reply to you should cover any other aspect of
taking a SOB, not specifically covered by my reply to Lozzo. So,
    what's the problem?

    Simples!

I take spare levers as a talisman to make sure the crash fairy turns her
    attention to someone else.

    Worked last time, anyway.

  5. The reason I have been informed is that stars are always near the pole
of a flagpole. So when viewed from one side it will appear back the
front. And they take it further. The soldierss' uniforms have it on
both sleeves, and they are reversed on one sleeve. The logic (if you
can call it that) is that soldier should always be moving forward and
the flag looks like it is being flown.

  6. If you're building (and haven't done this before...) then I'd allow at
least three months of fucking about and another three months of riding
it to then find out what needs fixing.

Plus if you need to source parts on ebay etc. then this can take
*months* and sidecar parts aren't cheap.

  8. Yeah, that came from a 3D animation usegroiup a few years back when
one of the users wass posted to Iraq and there was a photo of him in
his US marine's uniform. The question was asked and that was his
    reply, so I guess he'd know . . .
