First worry about getting onto the other side of the fence... then worry
    about equipment.

Get in the same possies as those togs and then worry about the glass.

Seagull wins btw what a shot!

Actually, you don't. Not right now anyway. For the first couple of
years, the camera and the glass you have will out perform you. Even
if you were already a pretty good photographer with a similar FSLR,
the DSLR brings new challenges. Getting your head around all the
changes in numbers - smaller sensor, that circle-of-confusion stuff
that changes completely with digital, and IIRC depth of field gets
shorter with the smaller sensor too - mean that you've got a new
battle on your hands. Buy new glass when you know what you have is
    limiting you, not before.

GB, who gets every bit as crap results through his $11,000 lense as
he does through his $300 lense!

  6. Wonder if it is the one my mate hit with his right bicep on Monday
there. At 180km/h he said it is no longer in the land of the living.

  7. Interesting, that website is not coming up for me at the moment.

But yeah, that seagull shot is pretty special. Talk about being in the
right place at the right time.

Digital photography gives you that advantage though. I started out
leaving school as a freelance photographer, doing wedddings,
commercial shoots, gigs and the like. I set up a small outdoor music
festival a few weeks back with a few big name bands (well for young
peoples anyway) and got a local photographer in. Again, someone who
works who with Smack (who else you got hiding in that building matey?
You've got my guitarist, one of my best cuddle buddies, my
photographer, it's getting insane) and she took 900 photos! Obviously
too young to have grown up in the era when pushing the shutter cost
    you money.

  8. And looking again at the seagull photo (the website came back up again
for me) it looks like he's riding with a pillion :)

I disagree with all of you, I saw photos first hand taken with the
same camera as mine , taken from the same locations (spectator areas)
but with far better quality glass and the results speak for
    themselves.

Yes being on the right side of the fence helps, but even then you are
not going to results that good with stock glass.

I got to the limit of my P&S after having those for 6 years.

I am not about to buy new glass, I cant justify the money.

Nah, you need to get the same camera in the hands of the same
photographer from the same location with two difference flavours of
    glass, and THEN compare results.

I'm suggesting, with respect to you, that for a long time the
difference is in the photographer, not the equipment. I get nice
results with my expensive lenses, but I get similarly nice
results with my cheap lenses. That indicates to me that I've not
yet reached a level of competence that allows me to properly
    exploit the expensive glass.

She is keen on developing her photographic skills. She's my number 2 girl at
the moment. Way too much talent for the menial tasks we give her.

Who is your guitarist? Half of The Evening Dolls are employed where I work.

where I work we all know about the circle of confusion, it's when the
lighting director, senior camera op, producer, director and exec producer
    have a meeting.

    Bullshit
That only applies if you are a total noob to dslr photgraphy.
I bought a 300D and hated the kit lens so bought a few old manual focus
lenses with a canon ef adapter which really honed my skills.
Since then I have acquired decent AF glass and never looked back, now
I'm on the market for a full frame sensor dslr, save a few sheckles and
    get the 5d mark2

  15. Yeah, Kala wants me to get her to gigs which I'm happy to do. She did
a good job at the gig but christ she's got a lot of shots to sort out.
Ross Hutchinson was playing in a band with me before divorce
life-change thing. Caught up with him a couple of weeks ago and he's
bought a lovely new Maton electric guitar. Bastard. You lot must be
    paying him too much.

Having beers in the sun with Pia on Saturday.

I know too many of your work buddies. It's spooky.
