PI Trip

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by Don & Cheryle Smith, Sep 18, 2008.

  1. In 10 days time, but who's counting, I off from Brisbane to PI. This will be
my first time to PI as well as my first long trip. Plan A is down the coast
to Port Macquarie (I've done The Waterfall Way already) then up the Oxley to
Walcha then down Thunderbolts Way to Singleton. Putty Road to Richmond then
down to Bulli and up to Moss Vale. From there to Cooma and the Alpine Way to
    Tallangatta then down to PI.

I've given myself 5 days to do this or is that unreasonable. Have I missed
out any good roads or are there any I mentioned that I should pass on.

I read somewhere the other day that the Alpine Way may be closed due to
snow. Is that a possibility and what would be the alternatives.

Many thanks for any suggestions (whatever they may be).

    If it's relevant I'll be on an R 1150RT.

    Thanks again

    Don.

I normally turn off at Nerang and then go through Numinbah Valley to
Murwillumbah and then near Nimbin to Kyogle, Grafton and the Waterfall Way.
(I'm not that into the Ox and I hate the Pacific)
Then your route to Richmond and I head up Bell's Line of Rd to near Lithgow
then, if I'm going via Canberra; head for Oberon and the Goulburn.
If I'm not going to Canberra I head out through Bathurst (and have an
obligatory lap) and then the Olympic Hwy down through Orange to near
Gundagai and then Tumut and the Snowy Mountains Hwy.

I generally do 3 days; stopping at Dungog and Canberra/Gundagai/Tumut.

All of this stuff would be a piece-of-piss on an R 1100RT with maybe 10 or
20km good graded dirt roads total.
    Cheers ..... Clem

  4. To get from Richmond to Bulli you have to ride through or around Sydney.
If you're doing that just so you can ride the Macquarie Pass to Moss
Vale, I wouldn't bother - the Princes Highway south to Albion Park is
very busy and Macquarie Pass has far too many trucks dripping slippery
    stuff onto the road.
Well, are you planning to get back? I'm pretty sure you'll ride faster
on the way back (everyone else does).
Cann River is actually a better ride. Look up a few posts to "sticks and
wind and stuff" for BB's post. The Alpine Way probably won't be closed
but there isn't Plan B if it is.
Then you've got 10 days to make a better decision about your ride. Or go
    with what you've got.

Fark; if you DO choose a "better" ride can I take the BeeEm?!

You're welcome to stay at Chez Humble in Canberra on the way - we
usually host a party of Queenslanders on their way South at that time
    of year. ;-)

  7. Plan A does not include an overnight in Canberra, but as there are still 10
days to go and another 25 letters left, things could change.

Thank you very much for the offer, I am touched.

    that. I blame the wine.

Don't say things like that around here, it's bound to get taken out of
    context! ;-)

    Sounded contextual to me.
