I'm sure MK could do a much better job on the history front but in brief,
extremely brief....

You had a fledgling secular Parlimentarian movement growing in Ireland in
the early 1900's offering the best hope they had all seen for a_long_time of
peace, stability and decent govmint. The State was then challenged by an
essentially fascist ultra nationalist (RC) uprising, as WWI was raging the
British Govmint didn't have the stomach for a proper fight and caved in,
using Partition to create a haven for those who did not want to be subjected
to what would follow.
What followed was decades of darkness for the ordinary people of the
Republic and the murder of many of those Jews and Prods who didn't get out
fast enough.

Partition, like India, was botched. I wonder if Partition is ever a
practical proposition. Leaving many Nationalists living in Northern Ireland.
At this point it is a mistake to call it an RC - Prod divide, many RC's
resided gladly in the North away form the downright unpleasant society
further South. What was happening in the South created a great deal of
resentment in the North and a deal of fear that the British Govmint would
eventually sell out NI leading to a repeat of the 1916-30ish situation. So
there was a strong reaction against the Nationalists living in NI and a
general desire to see them move South into the Republic that they apparently
so desired.

I can't be bothered saying much more other than human nature is always
present and the whole mess got dirty on both sides and people sometimes took
the easy option of dividing opinion as RC Vs Prod. But to do as you did, and
look at history starting anew in the 1960's makes no sense and creates a
completely distorted image.

As for the Romanians, these are Romanys who have been pushed out of mainland
Europe over time. For reasons I know nothing about they seem to be generally
despised over there. So WTF thought it would be a good idea to let them
concentrate beside a Post Conflict NI community still coming to terms with
100 years of troubles and swallowing having mass murderers promoted to
senior political positions. If you look at my original post I commented
that what was being done to them made my eyes water and the irony was not
lost on me. But nevertheless a blind deaf person could have known it would
happen.

Compare the No2 ethnic group in NI, Chinese and Chinese of Vietamese origin,
which has met with very little trouble or opposition, or the 1000 or so
Indians who have found the same. Those groups are seen as hard working, low
crime, low dependancy on social Security and generating new employment.
Perhaps the Romanians are viewed otherwise, rightly or wrongly.

 

Note entirely. There is a large element of Romanian in-fighting going
on as well, apparently.

Who cares though? Pretty much everyone in NI is some sort of pikey.

There's more to this than a simple racist window-bricking. The knee-jerk
reaction of the BBC when an accusation of racism is slung by an
interested party is always fascinating to watch, and the Romanian Gyppos
have learned well that this particular button is the one to press.

I knew from the start there was an underlying tension behind this and
it' more than likely to do with Romanian Pikey begging, stealing,
drug-dealing and general levels of ne'erdowellness than anything else.

In short, they stood on somebody's toes too often.

Or at least those originally identified as Pikeys in England were the
Oirish Travellers.
