I've just done a quick search of the web can't find any info regarding the
minimum age for a person to ride as a pillion in Vic. I have heard rumours
of 16 years but can't find any solid info on it. Does Vic have minimum
    age/weight restrictions?

I have seen MANY younger than 16, probably around 10 I would guess,
young enough to barely reach around dad......
    fuckin insane ..

Why do they need to be able to reach around the rider? Old enough to reach
the pegs and grab firm hold of the rider or some part of the bike should
    suffice.

I was talking to Michael Jakson the other day and on his advice, young
kids dont usually have a really good grip until they are a little
    older than 5-10 yrs old,

That was the other thing, one I saw on some old GS thing, kids feet
    didnt go near the pegs...

    I've forgotten the source of my (mis)information, but I believe there's a
traffic regulation which requires that a pillion must be able to reach their
footpegs, along with the usual stuff about some sort of grab-rail or fixture
(isn't that what those flimsy vinyl straps across some seats is for?) and
    helmet.

There is no age or other criteria I'm aware of.

Any better informed posters lurking out there?

We hunted for info on this a few years ago. Basically there is no minimum age. The only stipulation
is that the pillion must be able to reach the footpegs.

William was able to reach the footpegs at a very early stage as he's a lanky little bugger. He's 5
now and has been travelling to and from Kinder regularly on the bike for the last coupla years. We
did wait however until he had grasped the concept of hang on.

A friend in Mildura used to put his son in front of him until he was strong
enough to hang on while sitting on the back.
Maybe that explains why the same kid now drives a commodore at only one
speed. Mostly the same speed his father used to go when they were on the
    bike together.
That kid sure turned out to be a maniac. Come to think of it, his father was
always that. Best people I have ever met.

First I put accessory 'pegs on the lower-rail of the gearsack-rack but that
was a bit awkward so I unscrewed the rubbers off the pillion-pegs and
    screwed on some side-on 3x2s.
That worked for a while on the VX800 but she was 4 when I got the XJ and
    could reach the pegs herself.

THOSE DAYS she would hang on but 12 years later she seems to have lost that
    skill........

My 5 year olds have been pillioning for some time, the panniers act as
    footpegs.

We started with the dirt bike in the back yard when they were 3.

Mate next door used to ride his HD with small-for-his-age son (he was 5 but
looked about 3) on the back. Was like watching a baby koala ride off.

My son used to ride with me on an old Suzie step-through when he was 2, him on
the seat hanging onto the bars and me on the luggage rack, careering round the
back yard with him yelling with delight. My wife thought it was kind of cute,
but one day my mother visited..... [insert protective grandmotherly comment
here - better insert more than one. And turn the volume up. Higher. Almost
    there.]

These days that same boy sits on the back of the GS1000, or in the 200SX
(passenger side only), saying, give it a bit more, Dad, there's no cops. Dunno
if it did him any good in the long run.

My 5yr old can reach the pegs easily, But she doesn't yet have a helmet,
Plus the misses has said "Not Yet She Isn't", When we discovered she can
    reach the pegs.
What's the best way to train the youngins? I was thinking of slow rides
up & down my street, (We live at the end of a "T" court).

    Get fucked Biggus!
I loved Natalie 100% when she was 3 and I love her 100% now.
I've never hurt her on the bike and I expect I never will.
Just 'cause you've got some retarded idea that >10 is OK but <9 is child
abuse (or whatever YOUR numbers are) doesn't affect what happens to REAL
    people in REAL families!

    you'd like to share?]

In WA they have to be able to reach the pegs. Hence the third set of
pegs on the Guzzi. My grandson accompanied me on the Toy-run. He's
    nine.
