    It's about the excise duty. 80 shilling ale would have to pay, you
    guessed it, 80 shillings per cask (not sure what size). 90 /- is
    somewhat stronger, so has a higher rate. In effect then, it's simply a
    measure of strength, with 80/- being, IIRC, around 4-4.5%.

    Acquired by Grand Met in 1972 and sold nationwide, alongside Watneys Red
    Barrel, in exotic places like Berni Inns. Awful stuff.

    Seems the brand survives and is brewed by Wychwood for a pubco that owns
    the former Grand Met pubs.

    in yesteryear i think, or summat like that.
