I am trying to set up my computer to boot off of a USB drive. I have
Maxtor hard drives and I went and bought the external enclosures to
make them into USB drives. I set my BIOS to boot first off of the USB
HDD, second boot to CD ROM and third boot to floppy. MY hard drive was
already loaded with Windows XP Pro with service pack 1. I hooked it up
to my computer, turned it on and it would start to boot and then the
computer would re-boot itself. It did this about 10 times in a row so I
decided to put in the Windows XP cd and reformat the drive thinking
maybe if i reloaded Windows it would work. It let me delete the
partition and when it got ready to install Windows in the partition, it
said it could not see the hard drive. I then took the hard drive out of
the enclosure and hooked it back up to the IDE port and I reformated it
and reloaded windows and left it that way.

What am I missing here. I thought if my BIOS supported USB hard drives
that I could use it as a external drive and boot from it. I have
searched the net and some say you can and some say you cant. I was told
you could. I have about four different hard drives I use for different
things and I am always having to plug and unplug them each time so I
figured that if I made them all USB externals that I could eliminate
doing all that switching. It also crashes my hard drives because of the
shock of handleing them so much.

    What am I missing here?

have each hard drive so I could just plug in the USB cable a boot er
    up.

    Thanks for the response.
