Hi Matey, Do you know of anyone in our locale (Oxford/Swindon/Bath/Reading) that will check the valve clearances & balance the injectors on the K for me, without me having to pay main dealer prices ?
A search at UKGSer.com gives: "Andrew Sexton, oxford/warwikshire/gloucester border tel 01608 730111" and google provides an address www.ioxfordshire.co.uk/profile/301427/Banbury/Andrew-Sexton-BMW-Specialist/ This gives an image of an advert in a paper for an independent bloke in Stonehouse: www.ukgser.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=67880&stc=1&d=1182884055
Scraggy will be along soon to give the details of his tame mechanic who apparently does a very good job on K series BMW's. The guy lives somewhere near Scraggy in Shropshire but that isn't too far from Oxfordshire if he does a good job.
Reading the blurb that accompanies that advert, it seems that the bloke used to work for Rydales in Cardiff. They had a very good bike service dept. up until Frank Shitner took them over and closed the bike franchise. I use their other ex-mechanic, who set up his own independent workshop in Cardiff.
Throttle butterflies rather than injectors. Very similar process to balancing a bank of carbs. Pain in the arse on an M3/M5 too, as you've got to borrow a matching set of vac guages. JB
Sorry, wouldn't have a clue. I tend to do that kind of stuff myself. It's easy enough to check the clearances, but a bit of a pain if you need shims changing (rarely do.) The throttle body balancing isn't so bad either- if you've got decent gauges. I bought a set of Morgan carbtunes years ago which work fine. If you're stuck let me know; but I'm pretty busy for the next 2-4 weeks.
Cool, no worries, ta all for the advice above. I have no probs doing electrical stuff, and changing filters & oil 'n' stuff, but when it comes to valve shims and balancing I'd rather leave it to an expert. Plus the haynes manual showed some pretty specific tools for valve/shim work. Again - ta foak's.
The tools are only needed if the valve shims need changing. Measuring them doesn't need anything more than a set of feeler gauges.
