Can you get to your email hosted on Purple Cloud? I'm getting a
connection error, so tried the webmail interface and my inbox is fucking
empty. There's no information on their status or announcement page.

Anyone recommend a hosting provider for email and web pages (with PHP,
    MySQL)?

I can get in as webmail but the IMAP connection via Thunderbird isn't
working. Status, as you say, is reported ok.

Hmmm, they've had a few problems with their new spam firewall, I guess
    this is another one.

Like I haven't enough to do already.

No idea as I've no clue as to what you have just asked :)

I'll fire off a quick email to them and ask.

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting our Technical Support Department.

I'm so sorry but such an access to our mail server is not supported. We
do plan to enable it in the future. But I can't provide you with the
exact time frame, when this option will be activated.

Please feel free to let us know if there is anything else we can help
    you with.

    Best Regards,
    Peter

I recently moved to Google Apps. I changed my DNS provider at my host
(Fasthosts) to point to a free one (EveryDNS) and set the MX records
    there.

Onec i've cancelled the mail package at Fasthosts and just keep the
domain, I'll have a nearly free setup.

Presumably because fasthosts won't do cname?

I've been considering doing the same is everydns fairly hassle free so
    far?

Basically when one connects to the email server to collect ones emails, I
wondered if that connection can be encrypted and authenticated. Useful
when using public wifi access points so that no-one can sniff your
password. Some may not be bothered by such stuff.
    Gosh, much obliged.

Not had any problems with it in the couple of months it's been
running. And email is coming through pretty much instantly.
Obviously there is the issue of relying on small free services, but my
    emails isn't exactly mission critical.

I must admit I just use them for hosting, and use spamcop.net for
email (who are reliable as well as being a Good Thing).

Jude's emailed you this evening as well, both to the champ.org.uk
address. The forwarded one I sent earlier got a bounce this time.
    Done.

I've been looking at other providers and PC do represent a good set of
features for the money. So it comes down to whether one wants to pay
extra for the possibility of more uptime, and if I can get out of my
    apathy armchair.
