If you're still sniffing around the Android SDK, a VNC Server that A)
works, & B) doesn't require ultra levels of geekness to install would
be most appreciated (& probably make you fabulously wealthy).

The latter. I used MyMobiler all the time on my WM phone, & really miss
having it. I've installed RemoteDroid to go t'other way, mainly for
    controlling the HTPC.

Even though Xperia has a hardware keyboard I much prefer texting
    using a normal-sized keyboard.
(I could send messages using some Web-to-SMS gateway, but then I'd
only have half a conversation in the phone)

Umm, "interact with their phone" to do what?

If you've got your PC there, why do things on the phone? (Initial setup
    aside, of course)

Duh - me obviously! It might be one of those things you don't miss
until you've had it, but it's dead handy for things like texting,
copying & pasting text (e.g. do shopping list in Notepad then paste
into text thingy on phone), plotting in SatNav routes etc etc. Also
useful if reception's marginal so you can stick the phone by a window
or up on a shelf & still use it for texting, or see who's calling if
you're sat at the desk with a bluetooth headset on & the phone's got
    buried somewhere.
OK maybe that was a slight exaggeration, but there's a lot of people
asking for it in the forums. There's a few attempts at doing it out
there, but they all appear to be complete shite.

Would be handy in Bee's house where the bathroom window is the only real
    phone reception point..
