So I overhauled the master cylinder and refitted and bled and did all
those things you're supposed to and now the fluid is squirting out of
the bottom end. I can't see exactly where it's coming from but the
hose connection is dry. Anything I should check before I order a
    relief cylinder repair kit?

Sounds like you've blown the seals on the slave cylinder. They're a
piece of piss to change, but just get everything nice and clean of
built up chain lube before you strip it.

I was this -><- close to posting exactly that!

I'm *so* glad I read further.

I had come to the same conclusion. Bugger. No amusement this weekend.

So did the fluid squirt out of the master cylinder because it was
blown as well, or because of the slave cylinder?

I may have new specs, but they don't quite allow me to see things in
Bath from my home in Bedford

Let me rephrase: is it possible that the slave cylinder started
leaking as a result of the master cylinder blowing or that the master
cylinder blew out as a result of the pre-existing slave cylinder leak?

More likely to be as a result of greater pressure in the system since
you replaced the other set of seals.

Makes sense: both ends were on the way out and the shock of a properly
sealed master cylinder was too much for the decrepit gasket.
