I kept getting "That *will* be you in a few years"...... But, for some
strange reason, I was quite proud of that.

No, it's not my opinion, it's factual.

The C4 Corvette was produced in 1983, but the Merkins say it's a 1984
model year vehicle. Still doesn't stop it being manufactured and
available to buy in 1983, though.

I didn't make any mention of model years, just the years during which it
    was produced.

Don't they work a year in front? They seem to with the bikes, as they're
    currently buying/riding 2007 models.

Not quite a year - around 6 months in front.

Which is my point - you can buy a 'model year' 2007 today, even though
it was produced and registered in 2006.

However, the Yanks are too stupid to accept this.

  5. I think he's wonderful, that one. Can't wait for Top Gear - I watch the
    reruns for now.

He didn't say there weren't any produced in 1983, he said "no 1983
Corvettes were produced". Whether you think the use of model years is
stupid or not is irrelevant. He's a yank talking about a yank car, &
they do use model years, so he's perfectly correct in what he said.
This is true, but you did start your reply with "Are you right in the
head?", followed by a (probably) incorrect statement, then questioned
his identification of the year in a rather dumb manner. So it's hardly
surprising he replied the way he did. The rest of the thread's just the
usual Usenet 'my dad's bigger than yours' crap.

They refer to a vehicle's year using the manufacturer designated model
year, rather than the year of production. Steve seems to think this is
particularly stupid for some unknown reason.

It's not unknown in this country either. E.g. Triumph started selling
the '2005 Tiger' in 2004 as they sold out of '04s.

  8. It's simply what the fashion industry does all the time. Design has a lead
    time. D'OH!

I once got into a bit of a bun-fight over that, but it's how they do it and
*I* wasn't going to change anyone's mind, so I let them get on with it.

Which is total bollocks, coz as everyone knows, *MY* dad's the biggest.

The biggest "what" is the real question.

I don't know how far they are ahead, my V-Strom was manufactured in
    12/04 and it's an '05.
