That's the deal breaker, the skeptics lose.
It starts to make you think that faith has value!
I guess those who hold back perhaps don't eat the poisonous fruit, but
the ones who don't find the best flavours... I don't know, but a food
analogy may be lost on you anyway.

    Er, no.

You may of course, continue to live in the fantastically
deluded sphere of human existence belonging to the dark ages,
    if you so wish.

Poor form, but this is a medical emergency.

I've got about... hang on... 50cc here. I may be able to get a little
    more.

Only, I'm not sure what the "best before" date on this is.

Do you want it, or not?

I don't know what you're on about, unless you mean that even though I
think that the placebo effect has no right to work my headaches feel
better the instant I swallow an ibuprofen proves I'm deluded about some
    facet of the effect.
Time and time again it's shown that on average, a positive outlook can
affect the positive outcome of healing events from surgery or illness,
but it's mechanistically hard to come to terms with.
I don't *want* to live in the dark ages, but you only get equipped with
the intelligence you develop pretty early on.

Retain the positive attitude, dump the snake oil treatments.

Well part of it may require that you don't actually know it's a placebo.

I tried to buy placebos in Boots.

They didn't have any but they sold me some stuff which they said was
    just as good.

  16. They did some research using Ibuprofen. They gave some out in branded
packets and the exact same tablets in non-branded tubs. The people who
took the branded ones reported quicker and more effective pain relief
than the non-branded users - even though the tablets were all identical
    dosage and formulation.

    So placebo[1] is pretty powerful.

  17. Indeed. Up until sugar-mongness I always healed very quickly and
cleanly. It dropped off a bit when the diabetes cut in but not a huge
    amount.

    Apparently not:

Here is the standardised script which was prepared, and carefully
    read out to each patient:

Mr Doe we have a week between now and your next appointment, and we
would like to do something to give you some relief from your
symptoms. Many different kinds of tranquillisers and similar pills
have been used for conditions such as yours, and many of them have
helped. Many people with your kind of condition have also been
helped by what are sometimes called sugar pills, and we feel that a
so-called sugar pill may help you, too. Do you know what a sugar
pill is? A sugar pill is a pill with no medicine in it at all. I
think this pill will help you as it has helped so many others. Are
you willing to try this pill?

They got good results. Go figure, or rather: go buy shares in the
homeopathy industry. Sugar pills are the future, if only there was a
way to give them with integrity, and a straight face.
