My ski jacket that also doubles up as my winter coat has had it.

One day, I hope to go skiing again, in the mean time I need a replacement.

A friend of mine has got one of these:
    http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Jackets/Fission-SL-Jacket

Ver nice, but price tag to match.

Recommendations from the FOAK, budget less than half the one above?

I would go for separate fleece and waterproof/breathable shell. I'd
also go into a large outdoor/skiing shop (Oxford?) and see what they
suggest, what you like and what fits. There's a lot of good stuff
which would do you, but unless it's a sale you do tend to get what you
    pay for.

Now you mention it, the HH outlet at Bicester had some seriously
good/cheap ski stuff when I was last in there

    http://www.bicestervillage.com/en/brand-directory/brands/helly-hansen?q=

Having arrived, I spent the entire time looking for industrial winching
gear in an attempt to get T out of the shops before her credit card
    activity caused a fire risk.

    Not sure if this counts:

    http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/product-search/text/akka

as a ski jacket, but at that price[1] I can recommend it as a winter jacket.

    I got one of these

    http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/the-north-face-nuptse-mens-insulated-jacket-p101924

On the same deal last year. It's bloody wonderful.

[1] Get a discount card and it's £55 until Sunday.

    In communiqué <>, Monkey
I've got a HH ski jacket I bought 'new' off ebay a few years ago. Not
expensive, perhaps it isn't really HH. A bit on the thin side but I got
it in a generous fit and can get a fleece under it if necessary.

I've got a Go Outdoors card. A very useful Berghaus jacket with
detachable fleece liner I got from there for general winter wear was v.
    good value.

My North Face 'gilet' was a gift from SWMBO and I guess came from there.
Just the job for driving the MX5 in the winter - but not today!

I can recommend Columbia Titanium stuff. Fully functional and lasts forever.

I'd always go with a goretex shell with a good water repellant zip in
fleece, poss with windstopper properties (like the Ballistic)

I ski with just the fleece and use the shell if the snow/wind gets silly.
But I always have a small rucksack with me.

I'm sure I'm not alone in finding skiing a warm business. I got to the
highest point above Val Thoren in March, the weather wasn't perfect, yet it
was only the last leg home as the sun went down that the outer was required.

As it happens, on that holiday, I wanted a black rather than bright red
outer jacket and used a Jack Wolfskin Lakefield type outer, also excellent.
Which has become my default winter all porpoise wear. It sells here with a
liner for not too much: www.surfmountain.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=31589

I have an absolutely wonderful ski jacket, but the lining isn't
detachable and in sunny spring conditions I swelter.

As do I. My North Face jacket has useful armpit vents.
