North Face used to be good until it became a fashion statement. I'd go
for one of the more 'traditional' brands like Rab or Mountain
Equipment if I wanted something that was well made and fit for
    purpose.

GO are pretty good though and if Simon wants to pay a visit he should
go and say hello to his parents in Ampthill then come to Bedford and
borrow Adies discount card because there's a new shop about 10 minutes
    from our house.

Perfect for winter, but as a ski jacket I'd rather have something
lightweight and breathable. Waterproofing and breathable, whatever Gore-tex
    say, no.

I DGAF about waterproofing, as long as I can decide whether or not go skiing
2 hours before the lifts open (and then go to the beach instead :) Now I
    only do one day skiing.

Indeed, NF now appears to go with white trainers, Vauxhall Novas and
    baseball caps in Burberry colours

Others have recommended various makes and types, but TBH the
manufacturer isn't really something I'd be looking at. For skiing,
best is a breathable outer shell, and on this I've always held that
genuine GoreTex is the only one to have, and whatever other layers are
    appropriate beneath it.

There was a trend some years back to have zip-in fleeces sold as part
of the jacket, but that's largely been and gone now. Much better to
have seperate layers, preferably made of Merino (wool) which is just
amazing - smooth as silk, warm as wool, wicking and breathable as the
best artificial fabrics. Oh, and it doesn't pick up smells, so you can
wear the same ski shirt for several days without getting stinky.

    So what do I look for in a jacket? Well, Gore-Tex first and foremost;
a good fit; technical features like pit-zips (vents), decent pockets
where I want them and a snow-skirt (stops the powder getting up your
back); lightweight is good; velcro cuffs can be good - latest
generation have very flared cuffs to more easily go over gloves; taped
seems keep the water out; fleece-lined collar to avoid rubbing on the
neck; decent hood with proper adjustment. Etc.

But don't get hung up on the make - it's the leasty important aspect
    of a jacket.

I wasn't going to bother with this, but seriously, 700 euros? WTF?

First, buy something warm to wear in winter when you're not skiing. Then
get some stuff to keep you warm when you're skiing. There you go, that's
    about half of 700 euros.

In the last 15 or so years of skiing around 50 days a year, I've mostly
worn ski tousers (so lined, and warm) and a shell jacket with various
layers of fleece etc. underneath. Start there, and figure it out. Get
    some cheap long underwear.

And that thing you referenced appears to have a non-stowable hood. That
is a major PITA for skiing, because it catches the wind and directs cold
air down the back of your neck. It's also supposed to be for "alpine
climbing", although it doesn't specify winter, summer, day routes,
whatever... My experience of alpine climbing is that you need the same
stuff as for skiing, at least on top - a shell with some layers
    underneath.

Don't look for the ultimate solution. Just get lots of stuff and layer it
    on. 700 euros.... pfft..

Any jacket without such vents isn't really suitable for winter sports.

Go to the TOG24 shop in one of the Factory Outlet centres. Their Merino base
layers and 2nd/3rd layers are wonderful stuff.

It's the Akka which is £55 until Sunday if you pay £5 for the discount card.

It seems every bit as good as my TNF. SWMBO is in Oslo ATM[1] and is
raving[2] about how warm it is.

Like I said, SMWBO is very happy indeed. At that price it's a bit hard
to see how you can go wrong.

I figure I've 'saved' £230 for £10 worth of membership.

    Long live the loss leader.
