  2. Did you look at the price?

And the beer packs price for, istr, 5 mixed beers or lagers (and only 17
    pints)...?

Pressure barrel, injection kit, big bucket and beer kits would come in at
    waaaaaaaay under that, surely.

100 quid. That's not too bad, IMHO.
I think your maths is a bit out.

    I make it 50-ish pints from the ale pack. (84 x 12oz servings = 50.4 x
    20oz servings?)
Well, at 64p / pint ongoing costs, it's not too bad, really.

Exactly what I was going to say. Beer kit is about £15, fermenting bin
about £10, plastic pressure barrel about £25, plus a few bits and pieces.
If you budget about £50 for equipment, you can turn kits into 40-pint
batches indefinitely. If you only do it once, and never use the kit again,
that's £3.20 a pint. Do it twice, it's down to £2 a pint. The more you
    drink, the cheaper it gets.

Of course, it's a lot cheaper if you get given all the gear by a relative.

My current batch has just been released to service. Good it is.

I've made several shipments this evening already, of a
    post-end-user-processing variant of the product.

Thanks Steve but that's a way expensive way to make beer.

My whole startup costs were less than £50 and that included all the
equipment. 5 gallon fermenting bin, thermometer, hydrometer, syphon
tube, tap, sediment filter, long plastic spoon, steriliser and 24 1
litre bottles plus a mid-range bitter kit.

Thanks for the thought but the product you posted a link to is a bit of
a gimmick, imho and now I've got all the gear, the only ongoing costs
are the steriliser (about 3 quid) and the ingredients (anything from
about a tenner right up to 30 for making your own mash).

Of course, the cheapest option would be to grow my own grains and hops
but that's quite some way off :)

    Ooo. What is it?

I've almost demolished my last batch which I made from chocolate malt,
crystal malt, hops and Irish moss.

Good it is, except that I wasn't banking on the grains having quite so
much natural sugar and I added 1/2 a kilo of my own. According to my
calculations it's about 6.2% abv and needs more beer flavour because the
alcohol taste has overtaken the taste of the beer.

Lethal is one way to describe it.

Have you tried using a barrel for the beer rather than bottles?

I keep considering brewing my own beer again (1) but had disasters
with exploding bottles previously and the pressure barrels available
    back then were fucking useless.

    (1) More than 20 years have passed and the taste has been forgotten.

As long as you add the beer when fermentation's finished and use bottles
that have previously held gassy drinks, you should be fine[1].
    They're not bad now.

[1] I use screw caps rather than crown caps.

    Oh look ma, An Expert.

I found crown caps difficult to make reliable without a decent machine
and consequently expensive, which I felt detracted somewhat from the
secondary purpose of home brewing. I also felt the whole thing with
bottles somewhat of a pain in the arse by simply processing the sheer
volume of them and in the end settled on self pressurised plastic
barrels. I have never used one but the Beer Sphere gets raving reviews
from your fellow alcoholics. The idea of the sediment falling down the
legs is a good one for a start.

I've found (from drinking other stuff made by smaller breweries)[1] that
crown caps can rust and give the beer that awful fucking "2p in the
    mouth" taste.

Anyway, the placky bottles cost me about 40p each but when they're gone/
given out, I'll buy some cheap-shit sparkling water from Asdas for 29p a
    go and use those.

[1] Remember some of that stuff from Cornwall?

Do you let it mature or are you like me and drink it all as quickly as
    possible?
    That's what I was thinking.

I made this last lot for Chrimbo but the way things are going I better
    put another lot on.
