Conspicuous consumption, I guess - "look, not only can I afford an M3
but I don't care about the residual value!"

  3. Do you mean better dressed or *actually* dressed?

  4. That's what I thought. Only an MX-5 would be gayer.

  5. Quite apart from the horrible colour I don't see the point of buying
    something like that.
If I'd built it and wanted to show off what I'd just done, then yes, I'd
turn up on it to all sorts of events, especially things like classic
race venues, just for the crack.
But somebody else built it. It's their creation, for them to ride - I
wouldn't ride it as it's not mine.

Different, of course, if I'd lobbed a wad of cash at a specials builder
and told them to get on with it to my specs.

Oh, loud colours I don't have a problem with. I'd even buy an ST in
Asbo-Orange. It's just things like metallic bile or bronze or "medium
grey with a hint of blue but it's really still just grey" I have a
    problem with.

I've never seen a yellow 911. Plenty of 968s though.

Is green still supposed to be an unlucky colour for cars?

Sure, certain looud colours can work - in fact othere halfs car is
going to be resprayed Orange and Black fairly soon.

I was thinking more of beige, sickly greens and that vile fleshy pale
orange VW used a couple of years ago. BMW's usually "work" best in
darker colours and I always liked Quentin Wilson's line - don't buy a
    Bentley in scrap dealer red

I wanted it. How can something that feels so good be wrong?
    Well spotted.
