    What is a Rat Bike?

This argument has been going on nearly as long as the "What's a Biker?" one.
Well, to add my 0.02 worth, a Rat Bike is a motorcycle which is ridden instead
of cleaned, maintained at the lowest possible cost with whichever parts are at
hand, and which is usually painted matt black. There's no room on a Rat Bike for
things like Chrome or, horror of horrors, bolt on plastic pretending to be
chrome Live To Ride (TM) accessories. Some motorcycles just "grow" into rats
during years of hard riding, others are turned into survival bikes as a personal
style statement. Loved by their owners and hated by the police, Rat Bikes are a
way of life. Have a look around and decide for yourself!

    [snip]

    sharks,

My bike gets washed when I ride it in the rain, hardly gets maintained (it is a
Honda after all) and has quite a bit of black on it.

How close for it to qualify?

And it looks a lot tireder than that up close :)

    Cheers

I'd home in on your "maintained at the lowest possible cost with whichever parts are at hand" sentence and say
that this, above appearance or condition, is the essence of a Rat Bike.
If it's got a bit that just doesn't belong but is functioning perfectly in it's new role then that's rat to
    me!

The base of a Fanta bottle for an indicator lens, waterpipe (or urinal-pipe) exhausts, jerry-can fuel-tanks,
seats made from god-knows what, a 'gearsack-rack made from a chair-frame [this actually looked quite
    professional].
Extra points are awarded for using pre-HK Holden parts too.

Actually, it does. Piston rings tend to contain a fair amount of it.
