On the 8th of January I got up at half past eight and found my wife dead on
    the floor.My message is simple
If you have loved ones then tell them and tell them today. You may not get
the chance to tell them tomorrow.

    Thats a story. Here's another.

Shortly after midnight on new yrs day '05 I got a text message from
someone who I'd been good friends with with for the past 11 or 12 years,
simply wishing me a happy new year.

2 days later I got a call from his girlfriend saying he'd died that same
night, they guess an hour or 2 later as he left the pub gone 11, feeling
    a bit odd.

In the space of 24 hours I'd seen two good friends get married, had one
die, and been woken by a certain UKRMer from Stourbridge snoring loudly
in the B&B room next door to me... the noisy fucker.

Shortly after that I went to dead mate's funeral, which put a different
perspective on life.. one that more swiftly than I imagined got
displaced by the day to day churn. (hadn't noticed that until I just
    thought about it.)

From there there's a ton of family stuff that's happened in the last 12
months which has been decidedly unpredictable, and not something I'd
ever want to re-create, or talk about on usenet... 2005 has been an odd
year, to say the least, it's the one that's made me feel old for a
    change.

Still, it's only 3 months 'til I've put in enough time at work to book a
sabbatical.. so this year might just be interesting for different
    reasons.

    Or something.

I had a very nice sabbatical from a prior job - then was made redundant
when I returned to work. Cunts.

Any ideas what you're going to do with your sabbatical?

I was due a sabbatical this year in respect of 10 years service, but a
couple of years ago, my employer decided to do away with them and to
give all staff an three extra days holiday each year instead.

Although I'm still a little bitter about losing the sabbatical, those
extra three days mean that I don't need to work now, which is nice...
    ;-)

My lords and masters don't grant sabbaticals but there is an extra days
holiday after 10 years giving 30 days in total.

I think I'd rather have the option of an unpaid sabbatical. I've never
managed to take more than about 23 days leave in a year in any case so
30 days is just useless. Of course I *book* the time to keep the HR
department happy, but just work it... no one notices apart from my admin
    person.

Does that still apply if, as I'm quite confident, our resident pyro has
opted out of the Working Time agreement?

  14. Huh. Our office is shut, by order of Senior Manglement, until Tuesday 3
january, so with 48 hours to go before the Christmas close-up, my boss
sends me (and my opposite number on another title) what arrangements we
have made to come in and maintain our on-line news service.

"None" is our response. And he goes all shirty. Asking us to maintain a
skeleton service when the company first decreed that the office would be
shut would have been a better plan.

    Wanker.

To make matters worse, he was off for the Thursday and Friday, because
he had holiday to use up, whereas my colleague and I still have a few
days' holiday left unused this year, which we can't carry over.

This explains why I'm crossing my fingers for the two jobs I'm being
    interviewed for in January....

Yep, at the moment it's just one vague idea of taking 3-6 months out and
backpacking around the world, maybe with a bit of volunteer work thrown
    in along the way.
We can take one after 5 years. I also get one extra days holiday,
    giving me 26 in total.
First Christmas in 5 years I've booked off, this one is. I normally
chose to work them as they offered a quiet time, but this year has been
mental work wise for some reason.[1]

[1] That reason being more work than people, I suspect.

Since I take more than 20 days a week (which I believe is the legal
minimum) I think they're in the clear.

No company could demonstrate that people who booked leave actually took
    it.

I'll be off to take some legal advice after the holiday because I'm
certainly not getting the legal minimum 20 days a week leave.

    No editing required.
