Pissing weather & drying laptops

So it was raining thunderstorms part of the afternoon, but at 5:45 it
had been dry for ages and looked set to stay that way. So on with the
leathers and off we go. About 2/3 of the way home the heavens opened -
I have never got so wet on a motorbike in so short a time. Raindrops
so big they hurt, sorta thing. Five minutes, maybe ten max, and I was
    literally soaked to the skin.

So when I get home I open the tank bag to get my garage keys out and
notice a puddle of water on the laptop lid. On closer inspection it's
got into the display, in two distinct layers. Seems to be working OK,
though, but I wondered if anyone had any bright ideas about drying it
out without damaging it. At the mo, it seems sensible to just leave it
on and hope its own heat will dry it - any better suggestions?

    nononononononno!

Switch off, remove battery, and place in a warm area to dry.... and you may
    get away with it..

But it's only the lid section that's got a bit wet - nothing in the
main body. Should be OK, shouldn't it?

  4. It's risky to dry anything electrical out by turning it on... as Spike said,
battery out and leave it in the airing cupboard at least overnight or until
there is no sign of any water.

Thing was, I didn't know any water head penetrated until I switched
on, and it's only in the display. What sort of damage is it going to
    do being left on?

Oh, and I'm home alone tonight, so an evening without posting doesn't
    appeal...

Leave it open, for maximum evaporation, and stick it in the airing
    cupboard (if you have one).

Is it possible that, if te water evaporates wuickly that salts/other
deposits could be left behind which bugger up the screen but if it dries
slower the water and all the things contained in it may run to a less
dangerous part of the innards? I'm just guessing, like....
Yeah. An evening "without posting"..... Uh-huh...... ;)

    No airing cupboard?

Leave it in the sun with the lid open and wait.....

Otherwise in front of a fan heater far enough away not to overheat the
machine but to provide WARM airflow (NOT Hot)

Hmmmm, there may be some logic in that, but it's trapped in two of the
layers of the LCD display, so I don't think it's going to "run out"
anyhow. The question really is whether it's likely to do any damage
    just staying wet...
    How would I survive?

It's a work one, so I'm not really fussed. It's nearly a year old, but
I'd rather not have to swap it.

Yes, it may have done that. Although most of it's on the edge where it
entered. I'm just not sure how much it can run in the layers on the
    screen.
    Ahh, good point.
    I'll try that. Ta.

In that case just stick with somewhere warm and not too humid. If
you've a desk fan then leave it blowing air across the screen as it
*might* speed up evaporation a bit.

Whatever you do don't try applying a great deal of heat suddenly using a
heater or a hairdryer, that way lies gaps expanding and possibly
    meltyness, or bzzt,pop,fizzle,fuckin'ell.. :)
