Plane Crazy...

  1. I just spent 8 days at the busiest airplane patch in the world... EAA
(Experimental Aircraft Association) annual flyin at Oshkosh Wisconsin...
I was among 770,000 plane crazy people beholding 11,000 aircraft on the
    ground and in the air...
    http://www.eaa.org/

While shopping at EAA's Aero Mart I found the aircraft of my dreams... a
1952 De Havilland Chipmunk Mk 20... so once again it was time to called
The Bank of Mary... she supported my desire to purchase and restore this
pitiful looking trailer queen back to flying status...
    http://home.earthlink.net/~netters2/lalovey/MyPoorChipmunk.JPG

Someday it might look as sweet as this Canadian Chipmunk belonging to
    Bill Rose of Illinois...
    http://home.earthlink.net/~netters2/lalovey/RCAFChipmunk.JPG

Or as neat as Art Scholls Super Chipmunk... who can forget his grueling
lomcevak maneuver in which the aircraft tumbles end over end... (note
his two place Super Chipmunk hangs in the EAA museum while his single
place Super Chipmunk is slated for the Air and Space Museum Washington)...
    http://home.earthlink.net/~netters2/lalovey/ArtSchollSuperChipmunk.JPG

Any angle you choose to look at a Chipmunk... it's pure sex with wings...

    http://home.earthlink.net/~netters2/lalovey/SmartChippy.JPG

Honda is a EAA sponsor... Valentino Rossi wasn't there to comfort his
bike so I volunteered in the still of the night... he he he...

  3. It's my lucky day when I can buy a handsome military specified trainer
for only 6K... fully restored and in flying condition a 252 HP Super
Chipmunk can fetch up to 90K...

Where the hell are you going to put it? The garage is
Mr.Chippy will hanger alone side the house until part by part will be
rebuilt in the Busy Little Shop next to Mr.RC45 and company...

Hi Larry - you'll *love* the chippy - I learned to fly in one in the early
70's, aged 15 (courtesy of the RAF and the Officer Training corps) - in all
my botched landings, I didn't manage to break one! As a proper military
trainer it's built for inverted flying, high G turns - all the really fun
stuff ) Best thing of all, it's *built* - none of that dodgy fibreglass
    ;o)
There's quite a movement to update 'em as part of restoration, a lot seem to
end up with bobbed wings, bubble canopies and somewhat more powerful
engines, my favourite so far is the "spitmunk" - I googled for "spitmunk"
but only got one useless hit - if I can find it, I have somewhere a Pilot
magazine with an article on updated chippies - if it turns up I'll mail you,
arrange to get a copy to you?

With the RAF/OTC training, I also got to go up for an hour in a Folland Gnat
fast-jet trainer with one of the Red Arrows pilots - damn glad I didn't have
    any breakfast that day.....

  5. Awesome project, Larry. How much time and money do you reckon
    it'll take?

  6. Hiya Dave... thanks... but I have a copy of the Private Pilot article
outlining the Poor man's Spitfire thanks to EAA's museum achieves...
however I like your term Spitmunk much better...

Mr.Chippy needs more beans so I plan installing a new inline 6 cylinder
Lom M337 made in Czechoslovakia which only goes for 27K...

nose first lomcevaks diving for the ground...

  10. Yes... Art Scholl did Reno from 80 to 84... but out over the ocean
during the movie Top Gun he entered a flat inverted spin and did not
recover... neither pilot nor aircraft were ever salvaged from the great
    depths...

  12. Have you asked over at Rec.Aviation.Ultralight?

Get involved with a local group of UL'ers - you might be amazed at what can
    be purchased - quickly - for a low $. I'm into UL's - the poor man's
flying - and perhaps the most fun type of flying (a nice combination).

At an airshow in Ottawa (Can) many years ago I watched Harry Tope auger in
his Hawker Hurricane. He was planning on heading home after his performance
and the plane was full of fuel and some baggage. As he made a sharp turn to
come down the flight line he lost lift, the plane stalled and nosed straight
    in.

Yup, a while back. Found a bunch of guys around here that fly, but no
one had anything I could afford. I might wind up using a half VW since
I could use some extra weight in the nose anyway.
Right now I just don't have the time to get really involved, but in a
few years when I have school out of the way, the kids are out of
daycare, and a few things are actually stable I'll start playing with
    airborne motorcycles ;)
