Heh, I see what you're getting at, however, IIRC, The Sims was spec'd
pretty highly when it first hit the streets. Besides, that's something
of an "apples & oranges" analogy; FPS games are, by their very nature,
    power-hungry.

Have you checked out some of the in-game footage from BF2? Then
consider you've got that gorgeous environment to play in alongside up to
63 other real, live (well, some of them) human beings.

If you want a near photo-real game environment, it requires serious
processing horsepower, be that from CPU or GPU.

Just stepping back to the original commment regarding early-adoption,
I'm not one who does buy so-called "bleeding-edge" tech; I'm neither
made of money (hell, that's how come I own what was then a decent
quality CRT TV and not a plasma or LCD!) nor prepared to put up with the
hassles of implementing and bedding in what is in many cases,
    essentially, unproven technology.

On that score, PCI-E is /not/ "bleeding edge"; "leading edge", maybe,
but not the former. It's a technology that has existed for five years
or so and has now become the norm for new mainstream consumer systems
not just exotic, high-end workstations and servers.

Texture & Lighting technology (T&L) has come on in leaps and bounds in
the last few years and the upshot of that is a need for bigger and
faster RAM, busses and so on. 256MB has been quite common for two years
or more with 512MB and 1GB devices are now starting to emerge.

FWIW, I anticipate spending little more on a 256MB card than I did for
    my 128 12months ago, i.e. about £160.

I'm still keen to get my TV to work better!

Heh, have to agree there, John. Mined ewe, I got as far
as levelling-up my first character (Night Elf Rogue
    named "Assettag"...heh) when BF2 came out. I haven't
touched WoW since and am being badgered constantly by my
guild buddies to come back online.

Have you seen "that" vid, yet? Mildly amusing if only
    for the cheese-factor.
    :)
