Got this through my email today:

    Hello all

RiDE have petitioned the Prime Minister with a view to making the sale
of frame and V5 registration documents illegal, as a considerable
number of them are used in motorcycle theft and insurance fraud. Can
you support this worthy cause by signing the petition, please? The
link is directly below. It only takes a few minutes, so please take
part and do your bit to stamp out bike theft/insurance fraud.

We’re running a feature on the subject in next month’s magazine and
would like any opinions or experiences or interesting stories you have
on the subject. Please tell us.

    Thanks for your time.

I don't quite get it. They want to make selling motorcycle frames
illegal, or selling frames along with the V5?

    Selling *used* frames with V5.

That way, it's easy to sell on a stolen bike just by transferring the
    legal identity to it.

Not sure of the exact mechanics of it, mind, whether they actually
swap the parts or merely restamp the frame & engine numbers.

    I'd guess the latter.

That'd be a bit crap that is, for people like TOG (and occasionally me)
as you tend to sell the frame & V5 together if you're breaking a bike.

They'll be endorsing leg shields next.

Well, true. Or even selling a damaged/repairable, possibly, though
there's the write-off system to negotiate in that case.

I actually thought this was already law; I certainly remember it being
a big issue a few years ago. I'm kind of neutral about selling frames
with V5s, TBH. I'll happily be guided one way or the other according
    to who shouts loudest.
How can you *possibly* be against them, especially as they're for your
own good? Also, don't forget how much moolah they'd save our dear old
NHS. Money that could be used in children's wards! Think of the
children! As a bonus they'd prevent passer's by from being put off
their lunch by all that nasty blood and gore, thus maintaining a
healthy market (not to mention appetite) for our lunchtime
sandwich-making industry, an industry that is wholly British and can't
    be outsourced. Everyone's a winner!

    Dear RiDE,

As you are part of the EMAP Group, you can get fucked.

  8. In uk.rec.motorcycles, BGN belched forth and ejected the following:
    How do they know?
Of nicking bike frames? Certainly not!
As if making it illegal will do **** all.

    Sorry, I won't sign it.

It wasn't some cry to sign it, I just used the subject of the original
email and posted the body. I'm not signing it either.
