What was the part 1 and 2 system?
You'll struggle to persuade me that was a good thing.

My main arguement about the system in use at present is that it
doesn't encourage a gradual increase in bike size. The 2 years on a
restricted bike seems crap and I'd sooner see that dropped to 12
months then allow riders to go up to about 100bhp for another 12
months before being let loose on top of the range sports bikes.

As it stands at the moment I wouldn't **** about with smaller bikes,
I'd just do DAS and buy whatever I wanted but that's not really a good
    plan for gaining valuable experience.

What I did with Star Rider but I didn't have to do the part 1 as I
already had a provisional licence. I think - it was a long time ago.

Part one was the round the cones routine with a bit of walking pace IIRC
and was necessary to progress to the part two road test. Unlike the CBT,
you could still ride on the road before taking the part one. I failed my
test just before the change to the two part test :(

I know little about sport bike pricing , but have heard of "high mileage"
reducing the price . Busted plastic does that too . AFAIK , the average
miles per year here (west Tennessee) is less than 3,000 . That is an average
of all types of bike .

I was referring to a city , Ogden Utah , USA . Two Bit Street (25th
street) was the blue light district during WWII , ask your grandpappy about
it ... Draggin' the Bully refers to driving senselessly up and down
Washington Boulevard in that city , usually trying to pick up girls .
Deweyville is a very small town about 45 miles from Ogden , where I
    misspent my youth .
    All clear now ?

Sorry, CBT then test. Everyone at the time (early 90s) seemed to call
    it part 1 and 2.
I don't think that it was.
It's tough to do that though without having something like that
Japanese model of cc-based licences. I guess you either train people
well, licence them for anything and hope they'll exercise discretion
in their choice, or do a stepped licence system where each step up in
power requires a further test. The latter being sure to discourage
    new riders.

For me it was (and to a certain extent still is) the only way I could
get on the road to allow me a college education (and it's proving
    quite useful at uni too)

I knew a couple that did it. I sort of did it by putting 250 sidepanels
    on a KH400.
Hmm. I knew several that did; didn't you do the same with your grant
    cheque?

And in this case, the rider wasn't very safe. After all, he topped

  18. not wrong at all...I took a written test to get the instruction permit,
then the "road test" involved riding down the block, turning the bike around
in a gravel lot, then coming back to the DMV's parking lot.... I was
informed before the "road" test that if I didn't "drop the bike" that I'd
    pass....

An even longer time ago, in my day as a learner, you bought an up to 250
and a pair of 'L' plates. The dealer showed you what made it go and stop
    and waved you off.

As soon as you passed our test you could buy a Bonnie or whatever.

My progression was a bit more gentle: Matchless 250, Triumph 350,
    Triumph 500, AJS 650.
