Pocket Bikes?

Where the hell did all these things come from?
It seems everywhere you look people are advertising these things. The Sunday
paper reckons there's a 1000 of them imported into Australia every week.
Where are they all?Anyone own one and care to give us the lowdown?

 

Im yet to see any on the roads in the western suburbs but have seen them
being sold at afew local places.

 

I'm in the west of Melbourne, probably see about 6 different Pocket bikes a
week riding around on the roads. Seen one riding around the CBD of
Melbourne about a week ago. No licence is required, no indicators and can
have kids to Adults on them making them very unpredictable. Had one pull
out in front off me while I was riding without looking. Lucky I didn't take
him out. Even a pushbike requires a helmet, but not these things. Should
be band from the road unless they abide by the same licensing, road worthy
laws as the rest of us. They are harder to see than a pushbike because they
are 1/2 the size, top speed of around 80. No protective gear required.

 

I was under the impression that, at least in Qld, they were NOT able to
be ridden on the roads as they were not registerable.

Perhaps if you looked while riding things wouldn't just pull out of you?

Yeah a shitload of R1 and Hog miniatures are floating around Geelong.
Apparently all the fuckers who loose there license buy (steal?) 'em so they

My investigations say that your impression is 100% correct; however I saw a
copper quoted in the Sunday Mail a few weeks ago saying that the laws were
a bit grey and didn't really cover them.

Heaps appearing on Moss St, Brissie. There's at least one 'bike' shop that
sells them, but I have seen a few buzzing up from Star Yamaha's end of the
road.

 

mate bought one for his son, cheap chinese shit, fell apart within 4
weeks.

Also the sellers are telling people they are "LEGAL" on the road for
kids without licenses etc

 

****.. next thing you know kids will be driving billy carts on the roads
without a licence. Where will it end??

Yeah, it's still a motorbike plain and simple. Just because it is a mini-me
version shouldn't change anything?

 

Maybe it falls into a scooter catagory, which doesn't need a motorcycle
license?

I think the problem in Qld was that they are a motorised 'toy"; not a
vehicle.

 

Nup, something about being under 50cc's....dont fit under motorcycle or
scooter specs or under regs regarding bicycles...

Nup, Police cant do anything about them at the moment. Its ridiculous to
think that someone can ride a pocket bike around the streets and major
highways without a helmet on and not be pinged....

Try searching the relevant state bodies web site for the laq regarding
motorbikes and the limits regarding size etc...or ask some of the more
knowledgable in this ng...

Well this morning the normal troop of 3 x 15 year olds drove to the
local shops on their mini racer toys , and being kids they left the car
park fast and leaning with one making the run across the road and the
other two hitting a car entering , no helmets and one with no shirt ....
you an guess how long the hospital stay will be .

 

mate picked one up for about 600 bucks. I got told the loophole is that
anything 50cc or over has to be registered? either way these things are 49.5
cc or some shit so they can be ridden of footpaths etc
top speed on em is about 60km/h

It's a power output thang. Any more than 200W of output, and it's treated
as a motor vehicle, at least it is here in Victoria. By way of example, a
torch puts out about 4 Watts, so you're not dealing with a lot of output.
